Task 2

We are becoming increasingly dependent on computers. They are used in businesses, hospitals, crime detection and even to fly planes. What things will they be used for in the future? Is this dependence on cumputers a good thing or should we be more suspicious of their benefits?       (剑桥1里P104，General training的task 2)

Due to the computers being widely used, we have gradually become more and more dependent on computers. From the minor parts, easily accessing to the Internet, various PC entertainments, calculators and so on, to the essential parts, which include financial management system, automatic control used in assembly lines or, even adopted in aeroplanes. Therefore, different views raise the attention of public concern on whether it would be a good thing or not. To me, I think the excessive dependence on computers is less good than a hidden trouble whose vital defection should be eliminated, and those adolescents with excessive computer use were found to show serious sociopsychiatric problems.

One of the growing menaces we cannot ignore is that information security and system malfuntion problems. For example, businesses the world over are ploughing back billions of dollars and thousands of hours every year into building defences against computer viruses. But they seem to be waging a losing battle as hackers find new ways of exploiting security flaws. What most disconcerting is that their unholy designs are founded on our over-dependence on computers. We are impatient lot, unable to take even a moment delay in our stride. Worse still, we are seldom prepared with appropriate back-ups for eventualities.

The other threat to our daily life is that Internet or PC games addiction. The great population is vastly based on teenagers, even adults cannot resist the temptation, “hooked” on the Internet, spending hours time in front of the table. For the introverted child or teen, excessive playing can further isolate them from friends and peers.

Intellectual property issue, is yet another fact we cannot deny. Traditional records selling is being replaced by convenient mp3 downloading from Internet. Digital music, digital movies or TV series flourish, especially those without legitimate permission, which not only affect the disc market share but also illegal to intelletual property laws.

So, despite appreciating the benefits of computer use, we should always keep an eye on the negative effects it conceals. Updating the new technology, refreshing our minds are the key method in dealing with computer related problems.
