题目:ARGUMENT189 - The following is a recommendation from the dean at Foley College, a small liberal arts college, to the president of the college.
"Since college-bound students are increasingly concerned about job prospects after graduation, Foley College should attempt to increase enrollment by promising to find its students jobs after they graduate. Many administrators feel that this strategy is a way for Foley to compete against larger and more prestigious schools and to encourage students to begin preparing for careers as soon as they enter college. Furthermore, a student who must choose a career path within his or her first year of college and who is guaranteed a job after graduation is more likely to successfully complete the coursework that will prepare him or her for the future."

----------
In this argument, the dean at Foley College(F College) concludes that in order to increase enrollment and compete against larger and more prestigious schools, F college should encourage students to begin preparing for careers as soon as they enter college and promise students to find their jobs after graduation. However, the argument contains several crucial facets which makes the conclusion questionable.

In the first place, to make students find their jobs easily, the best way is to help them discover their interests and talents and choose such a major that based on them. In this way, the students can best discover their potential abilities and senses towards the major as well as the future job. However, the dean suggested that all the students must choose a career path in the first year of college, which makes students have less time to discover their interests and have to choose a certain major which is perhaps totally against his or her talents and interests. Thus, the students are not able to study following his own interests in the next 3 years, which may result in the difficulty in finding a job after their graduation.

Secondly, the dean concludes that the promise to find a job of every student is helpful when compete against larger and more prestigious school. However, the main factor to decide whether a college is great is the teaching quality of the college rather than a simple promise to find a job. Perhaps the policy in F College will really lead to the high rate of students to find a job after their graduation. However, what kind of job it is? Is it a job based on his or her personal interests as well as talents? Conversely, if it is not a satisfying job, it will not only make the graduated students feel depressed, but also have a chance to destroy his or her whole career for choosing an inappropriate major in college. Hence, F college should focus more on how to improve its teaching quality rather than simply making some promises to attract more students to enroll in the college.

At length, the conclusion lacks of credibility. To better support the conclusion, the dean should provide more information about how to improve the teaching quality of its teachers and more evidence about the reality of the promise that students will easily find jobs after graduation in F college.
Final Decision: UCLA
