Issue160” The most essential quality of an effective leader is the ability to remain consistently committed to particular principles and objectives. Any leader who is quickly and easily influenced by shifts in popular opinion will accomplish little.”

1.Admittedly, to remain consistently commited to particulai principles and objectives is essential to a good leader. Eg: Franklin Delano Roosevelt, THE NEW DEAL
2.what’s more, the leader who is quickly and easily influenced by shifts in popular opinion will accomplish little. Since most of the people’s opinions are inclined to be affectd by mass media, which may change all the time.
3.however, the consistently commited to particular principles and objectives is not likely proved to be right all the time. Eg: Adolf Hitler, Chairman Mao(later years晚年的错误，文革)
4.as discussed above, to make a balance is very important. The leader need to 了解，倾听大众的看法，适当的理解并接受正确的信息是非常明智的（wisdom）
5.in sum, equipped with the ability to remain consistently commited to particular principles and objectives, and to think about the balance all the time, a leader can accomplish the most.

Whether an effective leader need to remain consistently committed to particular principles and objectives depends on since it is a complex question and concrete situations should be taken into account. Nothing is absolute and this issue as well. Thus, keeping oneself and listening to others are of the same importance. Polarity in either side is not advisable.

Admittedly, to remain consistently committed to particular principles and objectives can really do good to a leader' decision. Without pesistence, the leader may change his or her measures all the time, then no stability could be remained. If a leader can nail his or her colors to the mast steadfastly, at least, it is a sign of confidence, and the confidence can make the masses believe in him or her without hesitation, then the proposition can be carried out much easier. Take Franklin D. Roosevelt for example, as we know, he is one of the three greatest presidents of America in the history, which includes Abraham Lincoln and George Wationgton as well. During the Depression, in spite of many people' claims that he was exploiting the successful people he carried out the New Deal. Consider that without the persistence, America could have been like another country, it may remain locked in depression. Then, the persistence make profit for the country and the populace.

What's more, any leader who is quickly and easily influenced by shifts in popular opinion do accomplish little. In the information era, the information on the Internet changes every second, not to mention the populace's opinion. Equipped with knowledge of media, we can know that the people's opinions are infuenced by the mass media most of the time. If the leader's opinion is easily and quickly influenced by the people, the mass media may likely to play the most significant role in changing people's opinion, including the leader, whose view has a remarkable impact on the society. However, the information reported by the mass media sometimes proved to be fake, even by some quality newspaper like The New York Times. Thus, an effective leader should not easily and quickly influenced by shifts in popular opinion.

However, sticking to the particular principles and objectives is proved not to be right all the time. When the leader sticks to his own objectives and principles too much, the persistence itself may result in disaster. If a person is a dictator, he or she could neglect others’ opinion. Since nobody’s wisdom can be neglected, the leader may make the wrong decision because of his or her dictatorship. Adolf Hitler is a good case in point, his abuse of the power and exceeding belief in himself leading to the slaughter of Jewish people and the retrogression of democracy. If he had adopted the opinion of stoping the war proposed by other people, the world would have avoided the great retrogression of democracy and the tremendous waste of resources. In addition, the Chairman Mao in his later years also acted like a dictator. He initiated the Culture Revolution, which leaded to gigantic suffer in political atmosphere and great retrogression of culture. The rejection of listening to others’ suggestion resulted in the huge disaster and his exceeding persistence of his own principles and objectives contributed the most to his mistake. Ultimately, we can see that sticking to onself too much is not a good choice.

As discussed above, to make a balance between listening to others and sticking to oneself is essential. The balance can make the most profit not only for the masses but for the leader himself/herself as well. Then how to make the balance is the most difficult issue for the leader and if he or she can bring it out, s/he can succeed. Thus, making the balance is the most essential quality for an effective leader.

In sum, equipped with the ability to remain consistently committed to particular principles and objectives and the the thought about advisable suggestion prooposed by the populace, a leader is likely to be an effective one, no matter what he or she would act in other aspects of private and social life. At last, the most important thing should be remembered is that polarity in either side is not advisable and the balance can make perfect.
