This statement contains 2 meanings. The first is that a thing should be considered ono its own terms and the second is that “a thing should be considered on its own terms” and the second is that “we should avoid the tendency to compare it to something else”. While I agree with the first one, I can not quite agree with the second.
As the speaker described, there is a tendency for people to look for similarities between different things. When we study in the elementary or junior school, the history teacher usually asked us to final similarities between different history events. We can also consider the situation when we entered other universities. We always try to find if there are any similarities between the university we enter and the university we come from. Why we tend to find the similarities? It can be easily explained with the 2nd example. When we find there are something in the university similar to our university, the thing always give us surprise, so in this case, it’s really hard to ignore it. So I think it might be the human nature that we tend to find similarities between 2 different things.
Admittedly, if we only find the similarity between 2 different things, it may bring unhelpful or harmful effect to us. For example, in some design institute, some crews copy other institute design for their project jujst because the project of the other’s institute is similar to theirs. So they take it as granted that the design can be used. But it will result in big construction accident because there’re not only similarities but also differences between the 2 project and these differences may lead to the accident.
So, as a supplement, we should also contrast different things. Not only try to find their similarity but their difference. Find their difference will caution us not to deal with 2 different things in the same way. Although there’re negative respects for trying to find similarities between 2 different things, should not argue try to avoid finding similarities, but ,to avoid the harmful effect it brought to us. Looking for similarities can give us a deeper impression of the 2 things and help us to understand them more deeply. And if there’re no similarities, how could we say the differences. So we can not avoid looking for similarities when we want to analyze 2 different things.
In a word, we should not only look for similarities between different things, but also contrast them, and try to find its differences.
