Is it the artistic creations rather than the scientific accomplishments that reflect the true value of a civilization as the speaker asserts? I doubt this saying very much for two main reasons though I concede insofar that we can study a variety of civilizations, especially unveiling some mysterious ones, by researching their ample artistic creations. One is that scientific accomplishments in the time capsule of a civilization should not be underestimated even overlooked because of its substantial role in the process of forming a distinguished civilization. The other reason involves that in my opinion scientific accomplishments are more important to some extent than artistic creations in reflecting the civilization in contrast to the view of the speaker.

Looking back the way of civilization development no matter what it is, we will easily find a common phenomenon that there is no culture that could come out without science advancement and technology progress. In fact the history of human reminds us that the whole history full of toil, struggle and patience is a history that human beings strive for striding forward, resist the threat of nature and endeavor to challenge the extreme of ourselves by delving the essence of the world, seeking the principles of the universe, inventing novel machines, gadgets to improve productivity and make people live more conveniently. The Chinese civilization is famous for its creativity in science and technology one typical example of which is the ‘top four inventions’ accomplished in ancient China referring to paper, compass, powder and publication. It is these great inventions that contribute to the gloriousness and prosper of the Chinese civilization and continue to influence on not only patriotism but the civil values and ethnic spirit of the following generations of Chinese. Hence, scientific accomplishments are crucial components of a civilization.

Apart from scientific accomplishments, artistic creations also play a vital role in precipitating the form and development of a civilization. The eminent artists in their contemporary time undertake the significant responsibility that preserve the precious culture as well as display its prosperity and brilliance from the standpoint of modern rhetoricians. The artists left us a myriad of great works such as paintings, music, and architects of different styles in different ages by which we can feel and appreciate the charm of many distinguished civilizations. For example, when we listen to the symphony of Hatton, we will be dragged back to the luxurious Baroque by the euphonious melody as if we were lingering in the imperial garden and then enter a magnificent church of a typical Baroque style. What’s more, the artists also use their creations to evoke consciousness of people who are blinded by the ruler especially the dictator only caring about their own interests and eliminate the deficiencies concealed under the specious and kempt appearance of society. In this way the civilizations can be purified and come down from generation to generation.

However, the artistic creations work on the basis of advancement accomplished in science and technology. Without scientific accomplishments, the civilizations will lose an initial power to go ahead and can’t be preserved perennially, consequently it is impossible for artistic creations to achieve the aim to exhibit the civilization vividly, enlighten public, and purify the civilization. From this point of view, scientific accomplishments are more important.

In sum, both artistic creations and scientific accomplishments are indispensable proportions consist of a civilization. To better evaluate and study a civilization, we should combine the two respects together instead of parochially focusing on one side but discarding the other.
