48. "The study of history places too much emphasis on individuals. The most significant events and trends in history were made possible not by the famous few, but by groups of people whose identities have long been forgotten."

Which, outstanding individuals or groups of people, make more significant events and trends in the development of history?  The speaker believes that the power of people is greater than that of certain individuals. However, insofar as I see, I live under the idea that  elitist decide the way in which society will go and the general people is the main power promoting the development of history.
To begin with, the speaker asserts that the most significant events and trends in history were made possible not by the famous few. I think the speaker fail to take into account the fact that the elitists play an essential and indispensable role in the development of history, so I don't quite agree with the speaker on this point. It is universally acknowledged that most of the leaders have special talents and profound perspectives which make them distinct from the average people. They are able to notice the small matters that common people can't tell and foresee the future so that they make effective measures presently. Consequently, people do less mistakes and  choose a better way to go. Consider, without these elitists, our society may be not like what it looks like now. When we see back to the long river of history, a huge sum of names of leaders, scientists and artists etc. who contribute dramatically to the improvement of our society will come into our brains.  Chairman Mao, the first president of new China, directed his people to protect homeland against the aggression of Japanese army, set up a brand new country--PRC and enabled the general people to lead comforable lives without wars. What's more, Gandhi who is honored as the Father of India took advantages of "satyagraha" to end the colonial reign of Britain, which made India an independent nation. And his extraordinary philosophic thinking encouraged Martin Luther King in the USA, who lead the black people to struggle for the equal rights.
However, on no account can the elitists push history forward without the supports of people. From what has been discussed above, we know that the elitist exerted great impacts on the history process.  But placing too much emphasis on individuals and ignoring the effects of common people is surely unreasonable. Beacause a person's capacity is limited, he can't achieve whatever he thinks about unless he brings home to people that his idea is favorable and benefical enough to be supported. Only the power of people can make the huge social machine run. This just like driving a car, society is the car, elitist is the driver and average people is the engine. It is impossible to run the car if lack any one of the three.  Even in a small company, the manager's plan is perfect, but his employees' ability is limited or they don't stand on the same point with the leader, then how could this company develop well and compete with its rivals?
In sum, both of individuals and groups of people are indispensable part of  improvement of history. History do advance, but the way it goes in will be variant due to different leaders and advocates. It is necessary to intertwine the two factors to form an organic whole. In this case, our society could develop better and faster. Just as going to bank to withdraw money, only the client putting in the correct code and the bank taking the right key can the door of coffer open.
