TOPIC: ISSUE5 - "A nation should require all its students to study the same national curriculum until they enter college rather than allow schools in different parts of the nation to determine which academic courses to offer."

WORDS: 512          TIME: 01:20:00          DATE: 2007-12-24 23:00:00

The author indicates the nation is proposed to impose all its students to attend the same nation-established curriculum rather than distributing the freedom to the states or comunities to determine their distinctive courses. For me, I agree with the writer's opinion to set up a unified fundamental education system. However, at the same time, the nation has no right to deprive the freedom of those individual states to own their characteristic curriculums, which in my mind will benefit the children in the communities of different conditions and environments. Otherwise, the effect may fall short of the nation's original aim of education.

First, A national basic curriculum is necessary for children's growth. The principal reason is that the nation can assemble the most authoritative expertises to screen out the  becoming teaching material and arrange the most rational course schedual for teenages, which capacity is not possessed by arbitrary state. Besides, several special subjects are demanded for every student to take, such as mathes, philology, sport. futhermore, it is significant for the nation to establish a core curriculum to modify the students' behaviors, unify their moral standard and cultivate their patriotism, tolerance by a consistent education system. Therefore, it is needy for the existence of such a core curriculum.

However, the necessity of a national built core curriculum is not the reason to neglect the freedom for every individual state to organize their additional courses. Above all, for some basic curriculums such as mathes I mentioned above are readily to constitute a unified teaching standard, whereas for some distinctive subjects which depend on the certain condition and social can hardly come to a general agreement of teaching outline, since some parts essential to a particular part of the nation perhaps mean nothing to others. So such a teaching plan to care about all people's requirements is lenghy and inpractical. In addition,a specified curriculum just like agriculture may only be meaningful to a few part of the country where the citizens there mostly live by farm produce.

Secondly, the curriculums established by a state may become the feature of it and meanwhile, will make students there more competitive and delighted. I think my middle school appropriately suppots this view, since my senior school offers numerous elective art courses, from which I have participated painting and violin curriculum and when I recall my middle school lives, the experience of these two courses impressed me most and now I even ascribe my success and enthusiasm on art to it. As far as what I am concerned, some funny and creative class organized by schools or communities with advanced education theory are considerably beneficial to children. Those vivid and fit courses, to a great extent, stir the syudents'interets and imagination, in addtion, they may assist the teenages to find their directions to strive for.

To sum up, a sensible choice for the country is to not only establish an efficient core curriculum, but also not interfere with the states to augment curriculums they consider essential. This system will largely enrich the contents and measures of education, which is favor of students'interests.
