由于这个话题太老了,现在电视都过时了,所以我添加了电脑和互联网在电视的位置上。可以代替。
38 "In the age of television (internet andcomputer), reading books is not as important as it once was. People can learnas much by watching television as they can by reading books." [05/57; 06/3]
在电视机时代,阅读书籍已经没有原来那样重要了。人们从电视上学到的东西丝毫不比从书本中学来的少。
Asthe development of technology, our society has entered the era of mass information characterized by television, telecommunication and internet. More and more traditionalthoughts and behaviors have been challenged then ever before. For example, People used to getinformed form books, newspapers and magazines, while they are increasinglyrelying on the new media such as television (internet and computer). As aresult the speaker makes an assertion that we can learn as much by watching TVas we do by reading books, which, in my eyes, is fundamentally reasonable exceptits implicit idea behind the speaker’s assertion that television (internet andcomputer) can totally take the place of books. To better present my viewpointlet me illustrate it below in details.
To start with, as a new form of media, the television (internetand computer) has obviously advantages over books mainly in three respects. Thefirst has to do with its capacity and capability. Undoubtedly the television (internet and computer) can meet everyone’s demand in that it is supported by huge databases which can contain whatever you want in books. Moreover it will save yourmuch space and time to store and search the books. Once you have a set of television(pc with access to the internet), you can just enjoy the very materials you arelooking for just as you have a library in home.
The second has to do with its feature of function. Thetelevision (internet and computer) is easy to be accepted for its variety, especially by those who are apt to be attracted by new things. It is known toall that the information carried by television (internet and computer) are notonly in words which is mainly used in books, but in other active forms likepictures, animation, cartoon and sounds as well. In addition some sophisticatedtelevision (internet and computer) can interact with its audience, whichobviously surpasses the function of books. Just consider how a hurricanebegins, grows and gets angry, how a amazing goal is shot by Michael Jordan andhow the refugees in African starve to death. Is it a easy work to just recordin words? Definitely the reader can not understand it deeply by books.
The three is about its availability and accessibility. Theinformation contain in television (internet and computer) can be accessedeasily whenever and wherever you are. You can just enjoy it without takingalone with so many books, only if there is an access to the data bases. Afterall television (internet and computer) is so popular today that it is not aproblem to find these information access points.
Following these arguments it might be tempting to draw theconclusion that the age of books is over and books will definitely be takenplace by televisions (internet and computer), which is the only contention betweenthe speaker’s and me. As a traditional media, books still has its merits in two respects. The first one is that books are green-source to information rather thanTV and computer. There are a lot of medical evidences proving that there are much radiation in front of TV which is bad for the children’s eyes and pregnantwomen.
The second one, which I think is more compelling, lies in the habit ofpeople, in that books are used for thousands of year as the main source to get the information and all the great men in history became great based their achievements on books. In matter of fact there is still majority of people in the world still used to books. It is neither necessary nor possible to get rid of all the books and force people around the world to tend to television (computer and internet) overnight.
In summary, from the above discussion, we can safely drawthe conclusion that the speaker is reasonable in pointing out the importance ofthe new media, while we can not neglect our old companion-books not evenmentioning to get rid of them. In the final analysis, just as the candle comesgood alone with the electronic light and the needlework withthe sewing-machine, the books definitely exist and play their role well with new medias in theservice to our mankind.
