这篇按照八股的模板写的,憋足了600字。感觉只要思路开阔还是有不少东西可以写的,字数不是问题。

41. "Such non-mainstream areas of inquiry asastrology, fortune-telling, and psychic and paranormal pursuits play a vitalrole in society by satisfying human needs that are not addressed by mainstreamscience." [05/71; 06/5]

When it comes to non-mainstreamactivities such as astrology, fortune-telling, and psychic and paranormalpursuits, the first thing comes to my mind is superstition, which I alwaysfight against. Yet, there are always a group of people in favor of such kindsof activities believing that those methodologies are somewhat reasonable. Andthe speaker even makes a positive assertion that those non-mainstream activitiesplay a vital role in society. In my point of view, the activities such as astrology,fortune-telling can not be trusted and relied on which I will discuss indetails below.

Generally speakingthere are mainly three arguments in that non-mainstream activities remain andhave groups of advocates even in the modern world. The first, the one I findmost compelling, has to do with the history and culture. Looking back to the progressof human beings, activities such as astrology and fortune-telling have a longhistory and rooted in many people’s mind. For example in the early stage ofmankind, the first men without any idea of the nature rules  had some activitiesand admired some sorts of god to fight against the fright in their mind. These activities handed down by generations and finally becomes ceremoniesrituals and even religions which are a part of culturesof mankind.

The second has todo with the complimentary functions. Although the science and technology is sosophisticated nowadays, such as airplane, telephone, rocket and even landing onthe moon which are dreams of our ancestors, there are still some phenomena can’tnot be explained clearly by scientists, like some curious illnesses, UFO events etc. When it comes to such very phenomena, people may appeal to those non-mainstreamactivities, which might at least come up with an answer or explanation to meetpeople curiosity, no matter whether it is true or not.

The third is anappeal to entertainment and amusement. During the activities people just havefun and do not take it seriously. In that case non-mainstream activities can beview as part of our daily life as amusement.

On the other hand,we should be well conscious about that non-mainstream activities is not science and we must not encourage them not to mention believing in them. In order to prevent people going to extreme, Iwant to present my arguments in three respects as a precaution of superstition. The first is, just as I mention above, that non-mainstream activities are not creditableand without scientific proof. Most likely the results or suggestions of such activities are totally wrong and even ridiculous which really do harm to people’s healthand belongs. So do not believe in them and count on them. Just view them asjokes.

The second lies inthe ideology of such non-mainstream activities. These activities advocate theideology of mentalism in which everything is determined by people’s mind or mysterioussuperpower from so-call gods. This thought is proved to be wrong and become barriersagainst propagation for spirit of science and materialism, which is not goodfor the development of society and civilization of mankind.

The third is simpleand on the margin of the topic. If people in favor of non-mainstream activitiesgo to extremes, it will lead to superstition which obviously does great harmour society.

In conclusion, after careful analyses above, we get a clear picture of such non- mainstream activitiesthat they are just simple part of our society culture rather than vital role. I’mnot totally against such activities except that they are in the way of progressof society and science, or that they do harm to people’s common interests.
