185 “Scandals—whether in politics, academia, or other areas—can be useful. Theyfocus our attention on problems in ways that no speaker or reformer ever could.” [05/64; 06/4]

When it comes to scandals, the first thing that comes to my mind is that some famous stars or powerful politicians  are in trouble somehow, either for their ruined lives or corruptions. The mess media takes the advantage of scandals to make profits, while people areusually view them as amusements. Nevertheless, the author makes an assertionthat scandals, in many areas, are more useful than speakers and reformers insolving the problem, for at least they attract the attention of mass publicopinion. To this point, I foundamentally agree with the speaker’s assertion.yet , there are also some disadvantage of scandals.

Generally speaking thereare three fundamental arguments for advantage of Scandals. The first has to dowith the facts that, no matter whether they are true or not, scandals actually reveal the problem of our society or even illegal crimes, which deserves more attention and further investigations by relevant authorities. Actually theproblems or crimes exposed by scandals may be very serious and sometimes vitalto the security of our countries, which is in deeply concealed. It is no longeran amusement for the public. And people will pay more attention to the problemsthemselves, rather than the private life of the leading actors in the scandals. In addition, this kind of scandal can solve problems and remind people whetherit is right or wrong .Just in last year, there was a scandal that shocked thescientific world that a Korean scientist made a Fraud in his scientificresearch work. The event leads to a considerable impact around the world anddraw much attention to the importance of academic integrity.

The second argument infavor of scandals has to do with its effect. Obviously this is nowhere more effective than on the depth and width of propagation of scandals. (我想用this is nowheremore than ..结构不知道用的对不对)This claim is actually twofold: (1)As to the mass public, forbetter or worse, in our society media viewers, readers, and listeners findinformation about the misfortunes and misdeeds of others, especially heroicpublic figures, far more compelling than information about their virtues andaccomplishments. (2)As to the mass media, they generally consist of profit- seeking entities, whose chief objective is to maximize profits for their shareholdersor other owners. Their profit-oriented feature makes them motivated to broadcast scandals.

The third argument forthe function of scandals has to do with democracy. Admittedly there are morescandals in democratic governments that autocratic ones. More scandals, to someextent, means less constrain on public opinion and more powerful with regard ofsupervision functionality of mass media. Only in the very atmospheres of freespeech and just law system, can scandals exist and take the notice of public. TheWatergate Affair in the Americahistory is such an example to show that the scandals have the ability tooverthrow a government, which manifests democracy and justices of law.

On the other hand, scandals also has disadvantage as a double-edged sword. Some scandals, without any evidence, are just be coined intentionally by malicious someone to disgrace their adversary,to gain profit or for other motivations. Such scandals really do harm to theprosperity of our economy and the stability of our society.

In summary, Ifundamentally agree with the author’s assertion that scandals play importantand active roles in solving the society problems and sometimes they are moreeffective than speakers and reformers. And yet, scandals also have some disadvantage that we should pay attention to.
