TOPIC: ISSUE50 - "In order to improve the quality of instruction at the college and university level, all
faculty should be required to spend time working outside the academic world in professions relevant to the courses they teach."
WORDS: 440        DATE: 2008-1-24 10:42:55
肯拍,有拍必回!

The author claims that all faculty should be required to spend time on working outside the academic world in professions relevant to the courses they teach, in order to improve the quality of instruction. I basically
agree with this contention from two aspects. Nevertheless, anything going too far is as bad as not going
far enough. In my point of view, excessive outside work for faculty may also do harm to the quality of
instruction at the college and university level.

Firstly, appropriate outside work will improve teacher's teaching level and complete the educational system in school. With a high pace of technological and social improvement, most of the published textbooks
always fall behind social changes and academic progress. So the practical working experience in the non
-academic world relevant to teacher's major will improve the understanding of what they teach and
accumulate teaching material to students, which can make up the disadvantages of textbooks. Besides,
with a huge gap exists between the academic theory and social practice, these non-academic working
experiences in professions relevant to the courses put college faculty in a better position to help students
adjust from campus to the job market.

Secondly, at a student angle, we are usually in favor of the teachers who like to mention a lot of personal
working experiences relevant to the courses they teach. There is a popular teacher in my college who
teaches Principals of Management—a theoretical lesson seems boring. However, his abundant personal
working experiences taken as teaching materials attract our interest deeply. So students always easily
keep a high concentration on his speech and enjoy the happiness from studying such a theoretical lesson.

However, as an old saying goes: going too far is as bad as not going far enough. Excessive outside work
also go harm to the quality of instruction. Teachers who spent most of their time doing outside work may
meet troubles when back for teaching, troubles such as large press under the social work, complicated
interpersonal relation and so forth. If a teacher does outside work at the mean time teach at school, he or
she is likely bringing affected emotion to class. If doing outside work without teaching at school, the
teacher is required to take a swift shift to the previous lessons; otherwise, it will affect the established
teaching process.

To sum up, in most situations, spending time working outside relevant to the courses will benefit both the teachers and students. Nevertheless, teachers should keep the extent in hand—spending proportionate
time and energy on outside work to prevent their teaching quality falling off.

With a high pace of technological and social improvement, most of the published textbooks
always fall behind social changes(是不是应该用changing 啊) and academic progress(progressing).
(基本阐述自己的观点)

Secondly, at(from) a student angle, we are usually in favor of the teachers who like to mention a lot of personal
working experiences relevant to the courses they teach. There is a popular teacher in my college who
teaches Principals of Management—a theoretical lesson seems boring. However, his abundant personal
working experiences taken as teaching materials attract our interests deeply. So students always easily
keep a high concentration on his speech and enjoy(enjoy 本身就是高兴吧 应该用gain 更好些吧) the happiness from studying such a theoretical lesson.

However, as an old saying goes: going too far is as bad as not going far enough. Excessive outside work
also go harm to the quality of instruction. Teachers who spent most of their time doing outside work may
meet troubles(不可数名词) when back for teaching, troubles such as large press under the social work, complicated
interpersonal relation and so forth.

Nevertheless, teachers should keep the extent in hand—spending proportionate
time and energy on outside work(working) to prevent their teaching quality falling off.

大体来说楼主的文章还不错,但是有写词组记的不牢固(speng   in doing sth)
希望楼主能在多点字数
