In face of the housing problem for the students of Claitown University and the fund for it, the author comes up to a solution of commissioning a famous architect known for experimental and futuristic building to build a new building. The author believes that the income from the fees charged to tourists will cover the building costs, and the new building will attract new students and part of it can be used as office space. All seems quite reasonable, but there are a few flaws that weaken what the author says.

The first flaw I want to refer to is that the new building does not necessarily solve the fund for the housing problem. What the author plans rests on the assumption that tourists are willing to pay money to tour the new building. However, it is only some of buildings built by the architect, not all, that the tourists are willing to pay to visit. If unfortunately, the new building happens to be among the ones that tourists are not willing to pay, the solution put forward by the author may be of no sense, and moreover, it even backfires to some extent. Even if when we granted that, tourists will pay to visit it, the author does not supply any data concerning the number of the tourists in this area. Therefore it is far from the conclusion that the income charging from the visitors will soon cover the building cost.

Another flaw I want to point out is that the author says the new building will attract new students as well as donations. Nevertheless, what attracts students to a university is not necessarily the buildings. It is true that the buildings of one university may have a certain effect on the choice of students, but it may not be true to the most students. The same is with the donators. There are few donators who justify a university just by the buildings. Perhaps the quality of teaching and the ability of doing research outweigh the building conditions. In any sense, the author’s solution lacks credibility.

Before I come to my conclusion, there is one more flaw I want to present. The author seems quite confident and calls the suggestion “a best solution”, while it is not necessarily the case. The university could turn to the government for help, or collect money from the society, either of which will be more or less helpful to the current problem.

In one word, what the author thinks is too optimistic. The condition of local tourism is not taken into consideration and the author just oversimplifies the problem. The solution lacks either credibility or feasibility, so it is better for the author to think over what the situation is, and then compare more solutions together and then get a more convincing conclusion.
