208. "The way people look, dress, and act reveals their attitudes and interests. You can tell much about a society's ideas and values by observing the appearance and behavior of its people."
208. 人们的眼神、穿着和动作都反映出他们的态度和兴趣。你可以透过观察一个社会中人们的外表和行为来获知该社会的很多理念和价值观。
The speaker claims that the way people look, dress, and act reveals their attitudes and interests, which I think it is unfairly. In my opinion, although people can observe the appearance and behavior of its people to quire much about a society’s ideas and values in some aspects, in other aspects they are not.
When it comes to that the way people look, dress, and act reveals their attitudes and interests, I think sometimes it is right. It is true that people wearing high-quality clothes and behaving in a genteel, respectful, and politely manner indicate they are educated and exalted, while some one’s act in a hateful manner indicate he or she is lacking for tutoring. But I do not agree this point in some other aspects: the people we called Eskimo who lived in Arctic always wear warm and thick sweater, scarf and overcoat so that they can withstand the cold and snow. Can I say all Eskimos are educated well or they are lacking for it? In this situation, the weather is the most important determination, and people can not know the attitude or interests from the clothes of Eskimos. Another example, people in some agrarian countries would dress for outdoor work and their clothes may strong and durable, while people in industry countries would dress for indoor work and exposure to their skin since it may be very hot. But that can not represent any attitude and interests; they are just forced by the environment.
Next consider the author’s point that people can tell much about a society’s ideas and values by observing the appearance and behavior of its people. I concede that people would wear some traditional clothes in some conventional countries. Such as Arab, people always wear a coif which signifies their custom and belief. But people in the country which has no such conventional rules may wear very different clothes. Young people would wear some fashion clothes but cost much and do and say some popular acts and words, which people can infer the society is open and freedom, while elder prefer to wear some austerity and succinct clothes rather than the fashion one. So can we know that whether the society is luxury or austerity? And it is entirely possible that the elder ask young people to wear austerity clothes instead of the fashion one in someday, and can we infer that the young people are homeliness but not dissipation? In my view, we can not just infer the society’s ideas and values from the people’s clothes and act before we know whether the society is a free one or an oppressed one. Maybe in some societies, people would belie their real attitudes and interests for the pressure of the society.
In sum, the speaker’s points are correct in some aspects and the free society, but in other respects and the oppressed society they are not. To analysis the people’s attitude and interests and the society’s value, observe the way people look, dress, and act is necessarily but not sufficient, since they may conceal some real attitudes and some other things.
