论点---个人的伟大是由同时代的人评判还是由后人决定，取决于该个体的功绩对社会所产生的影响。

正文段一：当符合社会需求时，个人的伟大可以由同时代的人给予认可（欧洲纸质印刷的推广，灯的改进）
正文段二：个人的伟大也可能由于其他的客观原因而暂时得不到同时代的人的客观评价，而是后来人给予认可。（哥白尼,布鲁诺）
结尾段：总结全文点题。

正文：
Are successors the only judger lobby who decide the greatness of predecessors as the speaker states in this statement?    According to me, whether an individual is a great men is up to the effects which he or she brought into the society.

Actually, his or her contemporaries can give decidement that whether an individual is a giant when achievements of his or her meet the needs of society at that time. In another words, someone in need of something, then another one appears with it. Such as the invention of Gutenberg printing press. At that time, the material to be printed was carved into wood, stone or metal, and rolled with ink or paint and transferred by pressure to parchment or vellum. Adding hand-coppied by members of religions, the number of books is limitted and price is expensive. Then Gutenberg press happens, makeing printing cheap, being convinient for the access of culture to every class of people. Certainly, Johannes Gutenberg has a good reputation with his contrivance among his contemporaries. Another compeling instance is the improvement of electric light by Thomas Edison. At the  age before the appearence of Edison's reliable, long-lasting source of light, people live in the dark world or an unsecurity  surrounding as the old style lightbulb is so easy to explode with a kind of flammable gas in it. Fortunately, after many times testing, Edison brought his electric light to the world, as well as safe light to color the life of society at night. And it's an obvious deed that dimming their light for one minute by his contempraries to admit and remember his greatness. From the above examples, contemporaries of an individual can join objectively in the judgement that whether he or she is a giant.  

However, people would discover the greatness of individuals whose merits oppose authority or prevailing opinions during that period later. Take Copernican System for instance. Nicolaus Copernicus, the founder of model astronomy, completed his fantastic work--- De Revolutionibus which poited out true phenomena about cosmos to the world, but his original manuscript lost for several centuries because his beliefs were agaist religious beliefs that had been held in the medieval times. Worse luck, another Italian scientist, Giordano Bruno, was put on jail for his beliefs based on Copernican System, and sentenced to death by burning finally. Many years later, their successors proved the fact and gave them deserved honor. Clearly, Copernicus' losing original manuscript and Bruno's tragedy unfold a fact that it is a misfortunate or a hard battle when a genius meets foolish but popular beliefs.

In sum, the speaker overlooks many great individuals, especially those persons whose achievements meeting needs of society were recognized in their own era; whereas, other excellent achievements might embark on a hard way to search successors to confirm their greatness.
