题目:ISSUE120 - "So much is new and complex today that looking back for an understanding of the past provides little guidance for living in the present."
字数:524
Is it useless to understand the past for guiding the living in the present? According to the speaker, the statement is true that because there are so much new and complex today. I fundamentally agree with the speaker insofar as to the situations in current society are more complicated than before. Considering studying of the past might provide some guidance that nothing can compare to, I find the speaker overlook the importance of learning from the past.
To begin with, the world today is a new one that little from the past can have guidance. After all, in the past, tourists might have troubles in traveling to any place for lacking of mass transportation such as thousands of plane, cars and trains; consumers might have to go outside shopping without the internet; patients might cannot be cured for lacking of techniques in genetic engineering --so much new has brought out with the rapid development of the technology that our ancestors even could not imagine in their dreams. But it is true, that our lives have influenced by so many new things with which our living level has been lifted.
Also, with such new things our society has become complex that many problems could not be solved in a proper way. For example, every year thousands of teenagers die not from the accidents or cancer, but by their own hand. They make the choice that they do not want to live on the world and they take their lives. Suicide is the one of the fastest growing killer of youth in current society. No one understands that why they choose this way while in fact they do. Also hard would be the judgment on whether the improvement in genetic world is worthwhile. This idea of human clone has fueled debate with countries all over the world, that whether it is morality and ethically right to clone human though this new technology might benefit human's health. Only these new centuries witness these new problems that the past could do little to provide help.
However, learning from the past indeed affect our daily live. A student who encouraged by Edison' courage might determine to contribute to technology; a children interested in the Van Gogh's paintings might have courage to continue his effort in art; a handicapped encouraged by Beethoven's inspirit might have courage to survival. Under the guidance from the past, no one could be avoidable to receive inspiration.
Furthermore, many things we might lose if little attention paid to the past. Lost might be the memories of the great man whose experience might help us to face with difficulties; lost might be the future generation have no opportunity to enjoy and learn where we come from when destroying the historical buildings to build a new one; lost might be missing the guidance to avoid the same mistakes which the previous generation had in the past. In short, it is necessary to look back to the past for seeking guidance.
In sum, what we have in today's world is a continuance from the past. Basing on the foundation we could build a more developed society. When we look back to the history we could find what the past could bring to us is expensive in current society.
