题目:ISSUE120 - "So much is new and complex today that looking back for an understanding of the past provides little guidance for living in the present."
Is that true that looking back for an understanding of the past provides little guidance for living in the present, as the argument asserts, since so much is new and complex today? It is controversial, and I would argue that studying the past is necessary for contemporary people.
Admittedly,we need to study new ideas for the society today is fast-changing. Many new things mushroomed in the past decades, such as computer, internet, cell phone and so on. They bring great changes into the ways we work and great convenience in our daily lives. These new technologies are everywhere today. It may probably surprise you if you hear one person who knows nothing about computer or internet. We should, to some extent, must study new things to follow the step of the society. Otherwise, we may lose in such a society that is full of competition because no human resources manager would like to hire a graduate who completely has no idea of today's new technologies. Therefore, we have to keep studying even if we will not in a classroom any more.
However, that so much is new and complex does not mean that it is useless to study the past of the human society. Deep views of the history may probably inspire us today. The knowledge now we have accumulated generation by generation, and some good methods which can lead to success will never be out of fashion. And, the great wisdom of the past can always be helpful because it prevents us from making the same mistakes which our predecessors did. One may probably miss some great discoveries if he or she ignores the significance success of his area in the history.
Further more, people today do need the good old values of the past back. Since our society is fast-changing, people today have much greater pressure than people ever before had. The insufficient introspection can easily lead to lost in the material desires. Thus, it is really necessary to repick the good old values of the past. The soul of today needs to be pacified.
To summarize, people today do need or must to learn new ideas in order to catch the pace of the society, so a lifelong learning should be encouraged. But there is no doubt that people today also need to be comforted and get out of the great pressure. We need to make sef-discovery, and, therefore, a looking back for an understanding of the past is absolutely helpful.
