TOPIC: ISSUE103 - "The study of history has value only to the extent that it is relevant to our daily lives."
History, defined as the events and issues in past times, definitely play a vital role in our daily life. Whether it is valuable only when related to individuals' current life as the speaker contends? Though I concede that history probably cannot solve some new-emerged events, however, in my observation, it is of great significance for both individuals and society, upon which the holistic world build a promising future based.
Admittedly, coincident with the development of the society, history experience may seem, to some extent, feeble in face of quite a few present problems. Consider, for example, the internet, which only emerged few decades, has expose some problems--the internet criminal cases, pornographic information, virus that causing the malfunction of sundry sectors in society--that focus numerous citizens’ concern. Since there is no such experience in the history, people obtain little from history. Under the certain circumstance, the society may take measures concerned to remedy the hole in law, in order to write new records in history for their generations.
However, we cannot ignore the profound influence history can exerts, especially to each individual. For supporting examples, one should look no further than those celebrities we learned from the history book. It is Edison who tried thousands of times that bring the light to modern life. By recognizing the history of his invention, most students--including myself, if not all, are exceedingly motivated by the preserving spirit, and determine to be more industrious and arduous in future work and study. Another case in point is Newton, one of the most physicists in the history. The eminent physicist, however, becoming arrogant and aloof, obtain little accomplishment in the last age of his life. It seems from the experience of our ancestors, we may avoid repeating the same mistake that may inhibit our better progress. In short, we are immensely stimulated by the history and draw a lesson from it to eschew the identical mistake.
In addition, history also serves as a magic mirror to current society and brings a myriad of benefit to all nations. For instance, the American Civil War, which rescues slaves from the inferno, provide great inspiration and brilliant experience for present people. Though that history has passed centuries, and has nothing to do with current peaceful and tranquil life, the spirit embraced in the war has been always lift vast majority of Americans, and acts as splendid compass while facing formidable problems. The great depression, for example, almost destroyed the fundamental of the American society, can be used to avert the repetition of that problem while dealing with those economic issues. Although contemporary life in America seems well being, the history of that time is regarded as the most significant experience in the development of the economic.
In conclusion, history may a little lag behind current life in that the advancement of the modern society is so rapid and drastic. Nevertheless, it is undeniable that probing into the area of history will cast ineradicable impact in society and individuals alike for its unique function. |
