ISSUE130 - "How children are socialized today determines the destiny of society. Unfortunately, we have not yet learned how to raise children who can help bring about a better society."

Children of today are the adults of tomorrow, and some of them will become the leaders and the mainstreams of society in future. Hence, I agree to the speaker's thought that how children are socialized today determines the destiny of society; while, in my view, despite many unsettled problem, the second part of the speaker's assertion that we have not how to raise children is arbitrary and I disagree with it.

To begin with, it is necessary to clarify the definition of "socialize". In my opinion, it is a process in which the children get to be suit for the rules and value system of the society, learn how to communicate and work with others, and find the positions in the society. Socializing children is one of the aims which our education should attain.

Based on this definition, how children are socialized today determines how they will act in society in future, and surely further determines what the society will be for that the individuals are the cells of society. As Plato said (and I paraphrase):” The direction in which education starts a man will determine his future life.”  If the socialization is unsuccessful, there will be disasters after these children grow up to be adults. The tragedy happened in Virginia Tech is an example of such failure; instead of finding an legal and effective way to solve the problems which exist between he and the others, the murder chose extreme behaviors to exert his discontentment to the society. It is no doubt that this kind of thought is relative with the failing education he received in early years: he cannot face these problems properly.

Admittedly, there are still many problems in the education, including socialization, for the children. Some parents pay much attention on the intellect education of their children, but overlook the importance of their emotional health. In China, Japan and many other countries, the overstress of getting higher education in order to gain a better life causes the overemphasis on learning, and therefore, people often overlook the education of other respects for the children, such as the moral guide and the like. Some of these students are often considered by the media as having only a high score but no feeling of responsibilities. Although such comment maybe somewhat different from the fact, it reflects the phenomena.

However, I do not think that we have totally no sense about how to raise children who will help bring about a better society. We have seen more creative, more responsible, more cooperate skill and so forth on today’s children, and all of these should attribute to the developing education measures, that is, we better socialize these children and they are more likely to bring us a better society. Actually, such thought had come up several times in history. For example, the generation born after World War II, which was once considered as “the beat generation” is the mainstay of American society now. As the history reveals, our society is becoming better and better. There is no evidence to support the second part of the speaker’s claim.

To sum up, the socialization of children determines what our society will be in future. And what we have to pay attention on is how to solve the problems exist in today’s education by which we raise children who will bring about a better society.（563）
