Argument 180 The following is a recommendation from the personnel director to the president of Ac me Publishing Company.
"Many other companies have recently stated that having their employees take the Easy Read Speed-Reading Course has greatly improved productivity. One graduate of the course was able to read a five-hundred-page report in only two hours; another graduate rose from an assistant manager to vice president of the company in under a year. Obviously, the faster you can read, the more information you can absorb in a single workday. Moreover, Easy Read costs only $500 per employee-a small price to pay when you consider the benefits to Acme. Included in this fee is a three-week seminar in Spruce City and a lifelong subscription to the Easy Read newsletter. Clearly, Acme would benefit greatly by requiring all of our employees to take the Easy Read course."

    Thirdly, the director doesn’t take the differences between Acme and other companies into account. It is entirely possible that Acme doesn’t need to read many report, let alone read fast. If it is the case, the small price to pay for per employee would be a big burden, which may slower the productivity of Acme; especially Acme should give every employee a three-week holiday with salary.
   In sum, the recommendation relies on a series of incredible evidences, which render it unconvincing as it stands. To better evaluate this argument, I need to know more details about the Easy Read course and the differences between Acme and other companies. At the same time, the director should provide sound evidences that the course can really faster our reading and the improvement of other companies’ productivities is due to the course.
