Argument 65  The following appeared in a memo from the president of a chain of cheese stores located throughout the United States.

"For many years all the stores in our chain have stocked a wide variety of both domestic and imported cheeses. Last year, however, the five best-selling cheeses at our newest store were all domestic cheddar cheeses from Wisconsin. Furthermore, a recent survey by Cheeses of the World magazine indicates an increasing preference for domestic cheeses among its subscribers. Since our company can reduce expenses by limiting inventory, the best way to improve profits in all of our stores is to discontinue stocking many of our varieties of imported cheese and concentrate primarily on domestic cheeses."

The president of a chain of cheese stores believes that all of his stores could make more profits by stoping stocking the imported cheese, however, his or her reasoning is based on two faulty premises.

Firstly, the idea that the profit which earnd by selling the imported cheese is greater than the expense saved by limiting the inventory is the central premise of the president's reasoning. To support this premise, the president shows that the imported cheese are not among the top five best-selling products at their newest store. However, not selling the best doesn't neccessarily means selling bad, and there is possiblity that those imported cheese still make good profits.  Perhaps, this newest store could save 1000 dollars by not storing imported cheese, but at the same time loses making 2000 dollars profits for not selling them. Thus, until given the amount of money earned by selling the imported cheese and that saved by limiting the inventory, we have no reason to believe that the profits will be improved.

Secondly, it seems hasty of the president to reach the conclusion that all stores will benefit from this suggestion, even though this is true for the newest store. Without providing the distribution of the subscribers of the Cheeses of the World, the survey is far from convining to confirm a potential increasing favor toward domestic cheese all cross the country, therefor we have reasons to suspect a totally different situation at old stores. It is possible that the imported cheese sells better than the domestic ones due to the different taste of inhabitants at different region of the country, and the suggestion may not work in those stores.

Overall, this suggestion is well-presented, but not thoroughly reasoned. To make it reasonable, the president should provide clear evidences to confirm that the money saved is more than the money lost in all stores across the country.

Firstly, the idea that the profit which earnd by selling the imported cheese is greater than the expense saved by limiting the inventory is the central premise of the president's reasoning. To support this premise, the president shows that the imported cheese are not among the top five best-selling products at their newest store. Secondly, it seems hasty of the president to reach the conclusion that all stores will benefit from this suggestion, even though this is true for the newest store. Without providing the distribution of the subscribers of the Cheeses of the World, the survey is far from convining to confirm a potential increasing favor toward domestic cheese all cross the country, (最好举个例子)therefor we have reasons to suspect a totally different situation at old stores. It is possible that the imported cheese sells better than the domestic ones due to the different taste of inhabitants at different region of the country, and the suggestion may not work in those stores.

还有一些缺点没举出the best way to improve profits就可以再发挥点
