Argument 65
The following appears in a memo from the president of a chain of cheese stores located throughout the Unite States.
"For many years all the stores in our chain have stocked a wide variety of both domestic and imported cheeses. Last year, however, the five best-selling cheeses at our newest store were all domestic cheddar cheeses from Wisconsin. Furthermore, a recent survey by Cheeses of the World magazine indicates an increasing preference for domestic cheeses among its subscribers. Since our company can reduce expense by limiting inventory, the best way to improve profits in all of our stores is to discontinue stocking many of our varieties of imported cheese and concentrate primarily on domestic cheeses."

The conclusion, from the author's opinion, which is that we should discontinue stocking many of our varieties of imported cheese and concentrate primarily on domestic cheeses, supported by best-selling cheeses stores and survey from a magazine, seems reasonable, but a the second glance, there are some flaws for several reasons.
First of all, lacking of extra evidence about newest stores makes this article vague. As the author says, the five best-selling cheeses at our newest store were all domestic cheddar cheeses from Wisconsin last year. But can we infer that best-selling food in last year will also sells in this year and even in the future. Then we should analyze why it sold well which is not indicated here. Moreover, there is also a possibility that new store sells domestic cheeses only, which could lead this argument unsound.
Secondly, the survey from Cheeses of the World magazine is not eloquent. As a comprehensive survey, it should include a large number of respondents and cover almost all the areas. Bur these information does not appears in this argument and we may conclude that the magazine just asked several people and made a report, which means that can not be a reference of a serious decision.
Additionally, even if above-mentioned possibilities is not true, the author can not persuade (persuasive)us neither. To improve profits of our company, there is not a only way. selling domestic cheeses better than imported cheeses does not mean that imported ones can not make profits. Actually, every food owns his customs while changes mean expense. The fact of preference that reported by the magazine is open and also is known by other competitor, so do they try to draw those consumers' attention. But at the same time we must think about that can we afford the expense of changing.
So, the argument is not convincing, because we can not rule out other possibilities. If the author provide more information and analysis of best-selling cheeses and the future sell, the article will be strengthened and more reliable. |
