Issue131 "The arts (painting, music, literature, etc.) reveal the otherwise hidden ideas and impulses of a society."
When the concept "the arts" is mentioned, what come into my mind would probably be the ideas and emotions that those masterpieces record and deliver, which inspire me when I got nobody around. Since the Renaissance, It has became a kind of remedy, in some sense, for both the authors and the audience to feel, to think and, more importantly, to express freely, which is likely to be and forever the essential value of arts and would mainly owes to arts besides other existing ways.
However, why advocate that the arts reveal the otherwise hidden ideas and impulses of the society? Some may take exception or direct opposite assertion before reconsideration, but fundamentally speaking, so immense is the range of description of the arts that every possible means of expression have been included into the category of it. Taking real, or another word physical, actions might be one of the merely literally fatal exceptions, as far as I am concerned, that would be adverse to the advocation.
Unfortunately, it will finally lead to the field of literature, a part of the arts indeed; let’s see how it happens. When a man decides to devote himself to his motherland at war with another, instead of writing a proposal for more soldiers, he’d rather be one of them. Nevertheless, what affects us is not the bravery itself, which means “the action”, as long as the process analyzed mentally, but the story, the possible ending of it, and, what’s more, the sentence “what if it comes to me, dare I do the same thing if there is an alternative” putting ourselves in his position, with the words and phrases utilized, which compose a simple literature. The rationale also applies to the remainder.
Then seemingly, “how marvelous it is” is left to be the only question that matters. As when have seen above, without the arts, supposing we cannot draw what we see or imagine, cannot sing how we feel, and the worst we cannot write, no letters and no languages exist, human beings cannot communicate, the whole society will be disassembled into single individuals, the civilization of thousands of years will collapse. That will be the last thing we want to confront with, with no overemphasis.
Moreover, the arts are actually a kind of media. When considering other namely modern media such as TV and internet and whatever else, they are only the transmitters of the arts. With the arts, we human beings can record and deliver our minds and feelings, which are likely base on the others. We will recognize that we are not alone, we are in a society, and we can improve it. Excitingly, Dreams, those fabulous ones, can be shared and fought for, and the people of different countries, different races, or different religions can appreciate and learn from each other.
And last but not least, the arts, though thought much of by politicians and bishops as well, not only in the past, might be the only field that we can maximally have our own freedom and privacy. Anger, hatred, happiness, or sorrow, all types of emotions, ideas, or impulses can be disclosed in spite of the consequences so far as they are not harmful. Thus works composed, some for the relief and the other for the mass or particular ones, can reveal the otherwise hidden ideas and impulses of a society, and can be taken as a reflection of the contemporary one.
