I agree with the speaker’s assertion that it is the artist, not the critic, who gives society something of lasting value. Although the critic can help us to understand the art, even strengthen the effect of the art’s fascination, what actually have been something of lasting value is the art, not the art critic.

In the recent world, there are many different kind of art, each of which can give us psychic impact: Mona Lisa which is created by Vinci always touches our heart with its classical beauty during the past hundred of years; Shakespeare writed the story of Romeo and Juliet which has shaked milions of young lovers’ mood; Pavarotti has convulse people’s soul all of the world breaking up the language barrier with his song; and now movie started to impact every one’s life as a new kind of art. Art is indispensable part of life, no matter in which civilization or what culture. Art nourishes our soul, enriches our experience. Our life would lack color and luster without art.

Whether the object can bring the world lasting value or not is due to its creativity. Creative thinking can continue to increace the total amount of human knowledge, improve the human capacity to understand, and open up a new situation for the practice. Art is a creative work which can lead to new things or new thoughts’ appearing, and then leave the society lasting value. Criticism is a method to value the arts. Through the criticism, we can understand the abstract art much easier, and we can easily known the signification inside the art. Take the 2008 Beijing Olympic Main Stadium (Nest) for example, it’s a art besides construction. So, it can give us aesthetic feeling even after years besides it’s Actual use as a building. And the critic about the Nest can help us to comprehend its beauty and let more people know that and taste that, but the real value does not come from the criticism but the art—the Nest.

In addition to creativity, art also has other characters. Art is derived from the life, but higher than life: It can abstract the feeling difficult to experience out of the life, xaggerate and process it, and then explain it in a more direct way such as music or poem; It can make the feeling which would gone with the time running coagulate, and then be passsed from generation to generation; It can epurate from the little details of commen life the essence most of people would ignore. Critic of the art can broaden the scope of aesthetic, allow people access to these delicate art more directly, but the actual charm is still hail from the arts.

In sum, the artists give society something by their creativity, and various arts bring us all kinds of aesthetic feeling, fill our spare life, and finally buildup the recent psychic world of the society. The criticism is only a tool to measure the art value. Although it can make the more valuable of the arts, the artist, not the critic gives society something of lasting value, based on the three reson above.
