TOPIC: ISSUE38 - "In the age of television, reading books is not as important as it once was. People can learn as much by watching television as they can by reading books."
WORDS: 451 TIME: 00:45:00 DATE: 2008-2-26 7:00:36
I agree with the speaker, to some extent, that watching television can help us to learn much knowledge conveniently. Nevertheless, whether reading books is not as important as it once was and whether we can learn as much by watching television as we can by reading books is dubious.
To begin with, I admit that television plays an essential role in our daily lives and we can learn much by watching it. Throughout the past decades, one of the most inventions is television. TV stations provide a large amount of programs which include a lot of knowledge and information, and people like to get information by watching TV. One of the advantages of television is that it can offer live image, and it makes us get knowledge directly and clearly. For example, instead of reading boring words in books, people can watch Channel Discovery to find how Niagara Falls looks like and how glamorous the Great Wall is. We can learn much just by choosing a channel which we like to watch.
However, even though television provides us so much knowledge and information, what we can learn more by reading books. In fact, knowledge which television can give us is usually elemental and basic. After all, the audiences of television consist with different people who own various levels of knowledge. Not everyone can understand profession information. Actually, in the daily life, the main purpose we watching television is entertainment, which determines that profession information should not be provided by the TV stations frequently. Nevertheless, in this circumstance, people can get almost any knowledge they want by reading books. With the development of education, most people need relevant profession knowledge, which they can not get through television. Reading books is the most significant method of their learning.
What is more, the book has a series of advantages which television does not have. For example, books are light in weight which means people can bring books with them no matter where they would go. When they are on the plane of travel, they can enjoy the knowledge by reading books, which is also a way of relaxation. But taking a television set with them is not feasible. Moreover, there are a large amount of books in libraries and thus we can absorb almost anything we want to study by reading in libraries or borrow books. In other words, we can get books in many ways and therefore, a huge amount of resource can be received by us. In this level, what television can offer is too limited.
In sum, although watching television is a method to learn, reading books is more important. In addition, it can provide more knowledge than television. |
