TOPIC: ISSUE212 - "If a goal is worthy, then any means taken to attain it is justifiable."
WORDS: 400 TIME: 01:00:00 DATE: 2008-3-1 14:34:11
写的时候对于if从句的虚拟语法经常很犹豫,不知道是不是要严格按照if would/过去时 这种结构写,特别是后面的主句的语法也是
In the reality, everyone will face countless problems which need to be solved quickly and creatively. If a goal is for in our interests, public or private ones, we would spare no effort to find the effective ways, even if we need to establish them by ourselves sometimes. When the manager of a company were facing the budget constrain, he or she might try to create some financial tools to solve it and that, is the real reason behind the evolution of our financial market. When a sales man wanted to increase his selling, he might come up with some seemingly ridiculous ideas, such as telling the customers that the goods had been sold out. However stupid it sound like in the past, creating scarcity is a popular sales strategy now and proved to be very successful. Hence apparently, this is nowhere more justifiable than creating various means to attain the goals we want.
But the examples listed above are the ideal ones: one could reach the goal by means which also benefit the society. The truth is, when confronted with difficulties, some of us might turn to illegal or immoral methods and that is basically wrong. The customs' benefits will be harmed if they bought something couldn't fit into their expectation; the stockholders' benefits will be harmed if the manager covered the bad situation of their company. So when the sales man tried to sell his goods by telling lies, when the manager tried to solve the financial problem by faking the balance sheet, they are putting their private interests over the public welfare. We don't need to be one of the victims to tell that these kind of cheating are morally and legally wrong. And so do the many other kinds of immoral and illegal approaches. So, most of us might agree that for personal benefit, some of the ways are forbidden by the society and are not right to take.
Here comes the most complex problem: for public interest, are we justified for using any means even the evil ones? Though most of us could reach an agreement that sacrifice public interest for personal profit is illegitimate, many might hesitate to say that only the righteous manner could be applied even for public good. For example, when someone decided to start a war to fight for their rights, such as freedom or equality, it could be categorized as botheither revolution andor massive killing. The only difference is, do the majority of the society benefit from it or not? The social norms, the morality and the laws are set to protect the common welfare, and sacrifice some of the principles to gain bigger benefit is desirable to the whole community under certain circumtances.
As stated above, the relationship between the value of a goal and the justification of the means are not so apparently simple. The only simple conclusion could be: we should always put the public interests before private ones and do our best to maximize the common welfare. |
