ISSUE27 - "No one can possibly achieve success in the world by conforming to conventional practices and conventional ways of thinking."

What makes successful achievement possible? There is an attitude among some people that and no one can attain success by conforming to convention. However, as far as I am concerned, complying to conventional ways of thinking and practice is an essential element for success, though one could get great success through innovation and creativity,

To begin with, I would concede that some of those who achieve great success are those who refuse to conform tradition and reject to follow the conventional way of their ancestors. Non-conformists are more likely to question authorities of the time fearlessly and make some astonishing breakthrough. History are fraught with stories about these kind of great men, conspicuous names from Einstein to Picasso come into our mind immediately. By challenge or contradict the prevail and accepted ideas of the time, they achieved great success and brought about new ideas and methods to science and art respectively.

However, to challenge conventional ways of thinking does not mean that one must violate or reject convention totally. Some outstanding artists believe that emulation is the first step of their career. Without learning the basic artistical expressing skills and principles established by earlier artists,  they could not produce any great works of art at all. Conventional methods actually served as guides and tools for their creations, not something blocked their inspiration and innovation.  When it comes to the area of science, it is similar. All the gifted scientists have to learn the classic theories and research methods at the very beginning of their research. Only in this process, can they acquire a broad and deep knowledge within their disciplines accumulated by preceding researchers and know where and how to get start. So conforming to convention is the essential elements to get success, if not the most important one.

(Moreover, actually success of a common person could be finishing their own goals successfully, though these achievements are not as great as that of the famous few. In this circumstance, one could probably achieve success even through merely conforming convention. For example, there is no need for a student to pass an examination by other means than conforming conventional study methods. And a common worker could finish his work successfully within the traditional regulations and procedures of his or her profession. These cases tells us that conformists could also attain success, though these kind of success might not be as prominent as a breakthrough.)

All the areas have their own well-established conventional regulations and rules, these conventions contain experience and wisdom of precursors. It is unwise for us to refuse convention totally, and it is also impossible to do this. However, the key point to attain success is that one would like to success could not always conform to convention without any innovation. If all of us rigidly follow traditional ways of thinking and doing things in all the aspect of our life, there would be no progress in our society and human civilization.

For all these reasons, I would conclude that conforming to convention would not prevent us from getting success. On contrary, by learning the basic theories and methods offered by convention, we could make a better use of our creativity and become successful.
