The greatness of individuals can only be decided by those live after them, as the speaker asserts? In my point of view, I hold the opinion that whether the individual is great or not both can be decided by the contemporaries and those live after them, and the descendents' appraise is more objective than the contemporaries.

To begin with, the greatness of individual sometimes cannot be appreciated by their contemporaries due to the following three reasons. The first reason is that their outstanding talent and transcendental intelligence surpass the common cognition of general public and their peers. Take the destiny of Vincent Van Gogh for example. He lived a miserable life, and only sold one of his paintings during his lifetime. Since the year he died, Vincent Van Gogh become a pioneer of what came to be known as expressionism and had had an enormous influence until now. The second reason is that their contemporaries are prejudiced and cannot appraise objectively. Here is an instance that is very persuasive.  The painter Rembrandt is renowned for his outstanding ability to render the human figure and emotions. But during his painting career, his most famous portrait--Night Watch was rejected and his rest of life was a tragedy. The third is that the appraise of their contemporaries was not correct due to their limited horizon, ideology and knowledge. The encountering of Copernicus serves as an apt illustration. Copernicus' heliocentric system was considered implausible by the vast majority of his contemporaries, and by most astronomers and natural philosophers such as Johannes Kepler and Galileo Galilei.

On the other hand, the individual's greatness can be decided objectively by those live after them because they have no prejudice toward individual and have no interest relating to the individual.  Imagine that if Copernicus' heliocentric system didn't conflicted with the theory of the former astronomers and did no harm to the interest of the religion, his theory might be received and he would be get the fame at his time.  Moreover, the descendents have a boarder view which enables them to make the right decision. For instance, after the death of Copernicus, strong theoretical underpinning for his theory was finally provided by Newton's theory of universal gravitation. Copernicus eventually found his position in the development of astronomy and was remembered by us until now.

Admittedly, the greatness of the individual also can be decided by the people live at the same time. The genius whose greatness could be recognized at their times are the lucky ones. In order to see this point clearly, let us see the example of Raphael. He established his mastery by 17 and began receiving important commissions. Later, he became the most important portralist in Rome, and designed 10 large tapestries to hang in the Sistine Chapel, designed a church and a chapel. He also took charge of virtually all the papacy's projects in architecture, painting, and the preservation of antiquities. When it comes to Newton, Picasso, Beethoven, it is the same.

In summary, the greatness of individual can be decided not only by the contemporaries but also by the people who live after them, and under most circumstances appraise of the people living after them is more objective and justifiable than the contemporaries.
