Does the study of history have value only to the extent that is relevant to our daily lives, as the topic concludes? Before answer the question, we have to make clear the purpose of people's historic study. The reason why people study history all the time is to summarize experience and make today's life more comfortable. Therefore the study of history would be meaningless if it has no relationship with our daily lives.
The earliest history researchers used to study history to find experience of govern, that is also why all governments have special experts to note their history at every age. After the Second World War, a lot of historists picked up the research of this war. On one hand, this war supplied a great number of classic examples for our military textbooks. On the other, which I think is more important, from this war taught how an autarchic war machine was built. From this piece of history, we learn the reason and conditions of a war, so that if there is another war we can nip it in the bud.
In addition, not only politicians but also people from all fields begin to absorb alimentation from history, especially in natural science. Take smallpox, a kind of contagion once widely spread, for instance. Smallpox existed as long as human beings and people have fought with it since it came up first time. Edward Jenner, a British medical doctor, studied the history of smallpox, and discovered the vaccination--cowpox. Then the medicine experts after him continued the study and downright perished the infection at last. The victory of the battle with smallpox is one of the most influential events during 20th century. In fact, there are many examples like this to prove that study of history affects our daily life. If the study lend little advancement to our lives, who will care about the researches and who will be eager to devote to it?
Furthermore, study of history can give us a clear view of the situation of our present life. Although we advertise the importance of protecting air and forests every day, many people still have not realized the ponderance of air pollution and forest detriment. The most direct way of giving ordinary people such conceptions is showing the history of our air quality and forest cover rates. All these studies will be valuable lessons, and in this way the study of history can influence our society development as far as it let us recognize our present world clearly.
To sum up, the study of history is based on our daily lives, and its final purpose is to help us building up a wonderful life. If the study of history breaks from daily lives, the study would become a non-root tree which can never live long. Only relevant to our daily lives, will the study of history has its value.
