195 The following is a letter from an editor at Liber Publishing Company to the company's president.
"In recent years, Liber has unfortunately moved away from its original mission: to publish the works of regional small-town authors instead of those of big-city authors. Just last year, 90 percent of the novels we published were written by authors who maintain a residence in a big city. Although this change must have been intended to increase profits, it has obviously backfired, because Liber is now in serious financial trouble. The only way to address this problem is to return to our original mission. If we return to publishing only the works of regional small-town authors, our financial troubles will soon be resolved."

In this argument, the author concludes that publishing only the works of regional small-town author will get Liber out of the financial trouble. To support this conclusion, the author cites that 90 percent of the novels they published last year were written by authors maintain a residence in a big city, and this change leads to the company’s financial trouble. However, a close scrutiny of the evidence reveals several critical flaws with the author's argument.

First of all, the author unfairly assumes that the original mission of Liber has changed a lot by publishing the works of big-city authors instead of those of regional small-town authors. Perhaps those authors who maintain a residence in a big-city are not stay in big cities during most of their time, maybe they only have big city residence but would more like to live in the countryside where the nature environment can inspire their delight and enthusiasm. Or perhaps those authors had been lived in country for a long time and they just moved in the big city right before the work was published. If it is true, the big-city authors’ work will not have much difference from those regional small-town authors’.

Secondly, the author observes a correlation between the publishing change and the company’s financial trouble, then concludes that the former is the cause of the latter. However, the author offers no evidence to substantiate this assumption. It is entirely possible that the financial problems have been existed for a long time, maybe there were more serious troubles during the time when the company only published works of regional small-town authors. It is also possible that people now can pay less money to purchase an electrical version of the novel and they are reluctant to buy the traditional paper-made books. Without ruling out such possibilities, it is unfair to conclude that changing publishing works leads the company to financial troubles.

Finally, the author unjustifiably concludes without adequate evidence that returning to publishing only the works of regional small-town authors will soon resolve their financial troubles. However, in all likelihood this is simply not the case. There are many other solutions rather than changing back to the original publishing work’s styles. Maybe a wide advertisement would help people know more about the company and its works and stimulating consumption. And maybe a new marketing manager, or certain new policies which may summon up the workers’ and the salesmen’s enthusiasm and as a result help the company get rid of the mess.

In conclusion, the author fails to convince me that publishing the works of big-city authors instead of those of regional small-town authors changed much of the original mission of Liber. To strengthen the argument the author must show that it is the publishing change caused the company’s financial troubles. Finally, to better assess the argument, it would be useful to know that returning to publishing only the works of regional small-town authors is the only way to address the financial problem.
