Such non-mainstream areas of inquiry as astrology, fortune-telling, and psychic and paranormal pursuits play a vital role in society by satisfying human needs that are not addressed by mainstream science.
Along with the modern orthodox science, there are some non-mainstream areas of inquiry such as astrology, fortune-telling, and psychic and paranormal pursuits. This is a social phenomenon which has its own origin. I agree with the speaker's explanation that these areas satisfy human needs that are not addressed by mainstream science. However, in my point of view, although they do meet some of our needs, these non-mainstream areas do not play a vital role in our society.
To begin with, I concede that the reason why these non-mainstream areas of inquiry could still exist in the era of science and technology is that they can satisfy some human needs. Although mainstream science has got great development in recent hundreds of years, there are still some matters which science cannot provide persuasive explanations or effective method to solve. So when people face such questions, they will probably turn to seek help from the non-mainstream areas. For instance, before purchasing real estates, many people in Hong Kong would invite the geomantic masters to help them decide which house is best and will bring the lucky to the owner. Furthermore, these non-mainstreams provide people a somewhat psychology comfort. The mainstream sciences are somewhat cold and cruel. For example, the orthodox sciences cannot give comfort to people when they lost their relatives. By contrast, the non-mainstream areas of inquiry often cater our psychological needs-they may tell people that their relatives are living good lives in another world.
However, I do not agree with the assumption that these non-mainstreams play a vital role in our society. The non-mainstream areas of inquire is more self-deception and false hope than reasoning and logical approach. After all, from these areas, people can only get some vague, if not wrong or false, information. They can seldom provide useful advice, let alone to improve the situation or resolve problems. None of the governments nowadays will make decisions on the base of information told by astrology or fortune-telling like centuries ago. In my opinion, along with the further development of the mainstream science, it is undoubted that these non-mainstream areas will gradually disappear because science can better guide the activities of our life. Thousands of years ago, when people got sick, they can only appeal to the power of god through witch doctors. Today, the medical science can cure most of the diseases and no one will continue being faith in the magic.
Moreover, the credulity of these non-mainstream areas of inquiry may even bring harmful results. People who believe in them may delay carrying out the truly effective methods. Some generals, who put their hope on the power of magic instead the military force, ignored the preparation before war, and met the failure without exception. What is worse, some non-mainstream areas themselves are harmful. The doses given by witch doctors often contained poisonous maters, which kill the patients. Due to their irrational and unreasonable actions, non-stream areas of inquiry might actually harm society and the individuals.
To sum up, although the non-mainstream areas of inquiry could fulfill our curiosity or relieve the pains in life , and have lasted for thousands of years, they are fading as time goes by. These non-mainstreams will one day be replaced by mainstream science.
