TOPIC: ARGUMENT38 - The following memo appeared in the newsletter of the West Meria Public Health Council.
"An innovative treatment has come to our attention that promises to significantly reduce absenteeism in our schools and workplaces. A study reports that in nearby East Meria, where fish consumption is very high, people visit the doctor only once or twice per year for the treatment of colds. Clearly, eating a substantial amount of fish can prevent colds. Since colds are the reason most frequently given for absences from school and work, we recommend the daily use of Ichthaid, a nutritional supplement derived from fish oil, as a good way to prevent colds and lower absenteeism."

In this memo, the author recommends the daily use of Ichtahaid, a nutritional supplement derived from fish oil as a good way to prevent colds and lower absenteeism. To justify this argument, the author refers to a study reports in near by East Meria as evidence. However, this argument suffers several logical errors rendering it unconvincing.
To begin with, the author's conclusion is completely based on a study reports in nearby East Meris. But these reports are dubious and unreliable which lends no support to the argument. In the first place, the author presumptuously considers the fact that people visit the doctor only once or twice per year for the treatment of colds as evidence for people's not having colds. But there are many other explanations about these seldom visiting doctors for people in East Meria. Maybe doctors in East Meria have so bad quality that people do not want to see doctor even having colds or perhaps people considers colds as small ails which are not necessary to see doctor. More over, the author takes little account other factors besides eating fish that can prevent people from colds. For example, people in East Meria may have more out home exercise or they eat other things that can prevent them from colds. Without ruling out these and those possibilities, the author can not persuade me to believe that people in East Meria have colds seldom and that the causes of people’s not having colds is fish.
In addition, even if eating such fish can really keep people from colds, the author's conclusion that daily use of Ichthaid which is derived from fish oil can still prevent people from colds is unwarranted. Maybe It is other components rather than oil in fish that have functions of preventing colds. More over, there may exist some serious side effects of using the fish oil. Unless the author can prove that Ichthaid from fish oil plays important role to keep people from colds and that it does not have side effect, I can not think this conclusion credible.
Further more, even if such oil can make people away from colds, the author hastily concludes that the absenteeism in schools and workplaces will decrease. Common sense tells me that people who want to escape from work can think out many reasons and cold is only a pretext they habitually use. Lacking of evidence that prove the reason of people’s being absent from job is really having colds, I can not think this argument persuadable.
To sum up, the argument is unreasonable as it stands. To support this argument, the author should give more information that can prove people living in East Meria seldom have colds because of eating fish and ichthaid have their functions of preventint colds. To better bolster this argument, I must know that there is no side effect in ichthaid and that people's absenteeism from work and school is really caused by having colds. |
