14   The following appeared in a memo from the owner of Green Thumb Gardening Center, a small business serving a suburban town.
"There is evidence that consumers are becoming more and more interested in growing their own vegetables. A national survey conducted last month indicated that many consumers were dissatisfied with the quality of fresh vegetables available in supermarkets. And locally, the gardening magazine Great Gardens has sold out at the Village News stand three months in a row. Thus, we at Green Thumb Gardening Center can increase our profits by greatly expanding the variety of vegetable seeds we stock for gardeners this coming spring."

The editorial recommend greatly expand various vegetable seeds to gardeners this coming spring in order to enhance profits. To support this notion, the editorial mainly cites the consumers’increasing interest in growing own vegetables, a national survey concerning the the complained quality of fresh vegetables in supermakets and the recent popularity of a certain gardening magazine. These facts seems appealing, however, after close scrutiny of them, the editorial’s recommendation logically unconvincing.

To begin with, the national survey on high dissatisifactionary on fresh vegetables in the supermakets almost indicate nothing about consumers’ potential purchase on vegetable seeds, for the following two reasons. First, the national survey might not exactly apply to the area where Green Thum Gardening Center is located. And, it is entirely possible that the quality of fresh vegetables available there is indeed satisfactoring due to highly-developed agriculture source. In addtion, people there might not have enough time and patience to grow own vegetables just because of their complainment about vegetable supply. After all, gardening, including growing own vegetables is a hobby. It is highly possible that vegetables grown by own are less palatable than the maket supply because of the skills and condtion.

Also, the good sales of gardening magazines contribute little to the great interest in growing vegetables. However, it is entirely possible that the management of magazines make a big strides, such as enhanced advertisements, noval typeset and up-to-date contents. Moreover, other contents of gardening such as planting flowers and trees might actually catch readers’ eye instead of growing vegetables. Equally, just as readers of magazines on climbing will not necessarily experience such sports but maybe only get appealed by spirit of challenge and transition, readers of Great Gardens might only appreciate the beauty of gardening by browsing edtions without doing any real work.

Last but not least, lack of market survey and basic information about cost and gains, the editorial’s assumed profit is open to doubt. It is entirely possible that so few people ever think of experiencing it in the past. Although the interest in growing own vegetables is increasing, people still show little passion about joining it. Besides, revenue might not cover centers’ cost in greatly stocking the seeds. Technology in vegetables seeds applied in private garden might be invested a great amount of capital, which will cause such seeds, at best, not low price and even price-prohibitive. Accordingly, only minority of enthusiasts might be the potential customers. Thus, over-stocking would sustain lossses in business for Green Thumb Gardening Center.

In sum, the recommendation flawed in false analogies and incomplete information about profits. To strengthen it, editorial should prove high interest in growing own vegetables and applicability of nationwide survey. We also need to know more information about the price of such vegetable seeds and purchasing power of customers in the area.
