136. "The absence of choice is a circumstance that is very, very rare."
The speaker asserts that the absence of choice is a circumstance that is very, very rare. In my view, the speaker unfairly generalizes. To some degree, we might have enough choices to choose from. However, sometimes we might be confronted with the fact that we have no choice in real life, or we have no right, no ability or no opportunity to have a choice.
Admittedly, a large number of choices are in front of us that we could choose from in some cases. We could choose what we want to do in the evening to relax ourselves, by watching movies, playing basketball, or whatever. A lot of foods are on the shelves that we could choose what we want to buy in the supermarkets. We could choose the place we’d like to go to have a travel. It is no doubt that we are free and independent to make a choice.
However, we are living in a society and associated with others, not just ourselves. Thus it means sometimes we have no choice but to do the things that we might be reluctant to. Students who want to enter colleges or universities have to pass the college enterance examination. Students who might have no interest in mathematics or English, but they have to study hard and pass the examination to graduate from universities and obtain the degree diploma, which is regarded as proof of competence in the increasing competitive job market. We might get tired and boring with such a tremendous burden but we have no other choice. We always feel we are bounded and our choices are limited.
Furthermore, sometimes we might be faced with the fact that we have no right, no ability or no opportunity to have a choice. In some poor areas, students who received the admission letters from colleges might have to give up the choice due to the high tuition fee they have no ability to pay. In a job market, there might be some notices that no girl would be hired in these kinds of jobs. We might find there is no commodity we need in the supermarket that we have no choice to choose from. In addition, we could not choose to be born or not and we could not choose when to die if we would die a natural death. In such circumstances, we could not do anything to have a choice but be approached with a positive attitude towards our lives.
To sum up, a great many choices exist in our lives that we could have and enjoy. However, we are often faced with some cases that we have no choice since we are not omnipotent. We might need to try our best to create a chance to have a choice. We should not give up at any time and continue to work with a faith in our heart to fight for the future.
