Issue 51 Education will be truly effective only when it is specially designed to meet the individual needs and interests of each student.

The speaker asserts that only when education is specially designed to meet the individual needs and interests of each student that it will be truly effective. In my view, the speaker unfairly generalizes. To some degree, education should be designed to meet the individual needs and interests of each student. However, it has some difficulties in putting it into practice. Many other aspects have imposed limitation on education.

Admittedly, each student should be treated individually. Everyone has his/her own specialty, and the same education method could not meet the needs and interests of all students. Some students might have talent in some fields while they are bored by redundant material from books. Some students might be treated unfairly by teachers that it would be an obstacle in their studies. Some students are good at mathematics but poor at English but they are required to spend the same time in the subjects. All of these factors could exercise unfavorable influence on their studies, and even their lives in the future. Take Edison for example. Edison was called “addled” when he was in official school and no one but only his mother would be his teacher. Fortunately, his talents were not hided in a napkin. Edison put all his effort into his career and kept his enthusiasm on science throughout his life. History told us he was ultimately one of the most influential and successful inventors and businessmen throughout the human’s history. Supposing that a class has 30 students, but just one teacher, it is inevitable that almost every student would be paid little attention to even if the teacher treated the students equally. Then, how could every student get the best education from the teacher to meet his individual needs and interests, and how could every student’s talent was discovered and developed.    Therefore, each student should be treated with different methods and attitudes to make them well develop.

Nevertheless, to meet the individual needs and interests of each student, it means the government should put a great amount of funds into the education system. At the same time, we must take into account the fact that the resources are limited, and our government could not bear such a tremendous burden. Faced with mounting social problems, like environment pollution, crisis, economic depression, poverty, and so on, it would be more imperative for our government and society to spend the public resources solving these urgent problems. In addition, it would be a troublesome problem to provide such a large number of teachers to the education system while the resources are limited in society today.

Furthermore, students should get general education, that is, some subjects should be required and students should learn knowledge from various fields to some extent. Nowadays we are living in a world that has increasing focused on demanding the job applicants who are proficient in various skills. A student with mechanical engineering degree might be also demanded to be expert in computer science. And in science and technology, a project might be completed with the help from not only physicists, but also chemists, mathematicians, and so forth. Thus, it would be a critical choice to require our students to master various kinds of knowledge to help them obtain more opportunities in an increasingly competitive job market.   

To sum up, every student should be approached with different methods to meet the needs and interests individually as much as possible, whereas we have to realize the fact that it would be an unrealizable task to implement. It would be a vital part of an education to achieve a better balance between students’ needs and interests, and society’s limitation and needs.
