TOPIC: ISSUE50 - "In order to improve the quality of instruction at the college and university level, all faculty should be required to spend time working outside the academic world in professions relevant to the courses they teach."

As Montesquieu once said, "We receive three educations, one from our parents, one from our schoolmasters, and one from the world." Hence, without doubt, faculties can broaden their eyeshot, obtain fresh insight and learn how to apply their theory to practice through professions in real society which are correlative to their academic world. But the speaker's assertion that all faculties should seek social positions relevant to their study is too extreme and too slapdash. In my eyes, it's unnecessary and also impossible for all faculties to do so. Besides, as you can see, the real object of education is not to teach students knowledge or skills but teach them how to think and how to educate themselves. Therefore, no matter when and where, we can never trivialize the importance of students in education.

Confessedly, society is also a big ‘classroom’; everyone can acquire enough nutrition from it. And this is the reason why we advocate some faculties to find suitable jobs out of school, especially in some fields which have great application in practice like medicine, mechanism and computer. For example, a professor in computer science can search a job in software company, during this work, he can learn the detailed production process of software, and also can get many practical instances which generally are not present in textbooks. Then in class, he can instruct these knowledge to his students, which not only are useful for their theory but also can benefit them when they find jobs later. In short, in some subjects, we should indeed recommend faculty working outside.

Nevertheless, first, it's not need for all facutly to work in society. For instance, a mathematical teacher whose major mainly focuses on some abstruse domains can obtain less from out world. The reason is very simple, others can hardly know what he concerns about and in society these knowledge have no applicable places. In this case, I really have no reason to suggest him finding a job outside the academic world. Secondly, it's also impossible for all faculty to work in society. On the one hand, just as mentioned in the previous example, some teachers may hardly search a suitable position in society which is relevant to their research, while on the other hand, even for faculty whose research has been widely used in practice, as the societal working positions are limited which can not satisfy the needs of all faculty. Besides, working outside must occupy their time which can be used in teaching and researching their majors.

Last but not least, as an educationist said, "You can lead a man up to the university, but you can't make him think." while the essence of education is continually asking questions and solving questions. So in our higher education, we should emphasize on students not faculty. Because even if we have the best teachers but our students don't desire to learn, we also achieve little in education. If faculty can breed students' studying interests and precisely direct these interests, then we can gain a substantial amount of accomplishment. So in the future, we should improve our education system to make most students satisfied and spend more time on cultivating the independent thinking ability of students.

In final analysis, I concede that the speaker realize the benefits which faculty can obtain from a social work relevant to their academic research and therefore enhance the quality of instruction. But as discussed before, the speaker ignores the necessity and feasibility of working outside for all faculty. Moreover, he overemphasizes the importance of teachers while overlooks that of students, which may be more serious than his first fallacy.
