TOPIC: ISSUE50 - "In order to improve the quality of instruction at the college and university level, all faculty should be required to spend time working outside the academic world in professions relevant to the courses they teach."
I agree with the speaker's statement that it is necessary for all faculty to spend time working outside the academic world in professions that are relevant to the courses they teach, for it is helpful to improve the quality of instruction at the college level. However, faculty cannot put too much emphasis on the outside work, then pay less attention to their basic teaching work.
First, as we all know, nowadays everything develops quickly. Some knowledge on books can be updated several times in a year. For example, a certain kind of material which we learn from book in college may be replaced by another advanced and economical one which do less harm to environment. Moreover, in field of art, paintings are no longer have to be created by paper and brushes, for computer can be used as a more efficient tool to help artists to compose a creative work. Under such circumstance, it is not enough for faculty to introduce students to the knowledge on the books at a college level. Teachers are responsible of telling students the most updated information in a certain profession. By spending time working outside in field of study relevant to the courses they teach, faculty may gain advancing ideas and sophisticated techniques, which are beneficial for student to their future study .
Secondly, working outside is also useful for faculty to instruct students' future careers. As the students are lacking of concept of careers according to their major, teachers have duty to introduce them the different from each other. Nevertheless, how can a teacher tell student the details of a certain job if he himself is inexperienced in working outside. Accordingly, faculty should be encouraged to spend time working in relevant professions, gain information about details of work and then introduce them to students.
However, faculty should also distribute their time in teaching and working outside properly. The basic responsibility of teachers is to instruct students in school. If faculty put too much emphasis on working outside, it is certain that teachers will be distracted from their teaching work. As a result, students fail to acquire basic knowledge from faculty, which is most important for them in their future study and work, only to be informed some advancing ideas. To my point of view, it is the college who have responsibility of supervising the time distribution of faculty on teaching and working outside.
In conclusion, as students will gain benefits from faculty's working outside in both being informed of new ideas and introduction of career details, it is necessary for all faculty to spend time working in professions relevant to the courses they teach. However, the college should take charge of supervising the teachers on the time they distributed to work outside, for sake of they may probably ignore their main responsibility of teaching basic knowledge in school.
写的巨恶心,不知道用四级的标准评分会不会及格。
能被我瞎掰出这么些字来,我还真佩服我自己。
