TOPIC: ISSUE103 - "The study of history has value only to the extent that it is relevant to our daily lives."
History, simply defined as the events, ideas, people, and occurrences that have existed in the past is an indispensible subject in every education system across the world. Although the study of history seems to be isolated from our daily lives, it does provide people with both incorporeal and material value. I have three examples to explain my point of view as follows:
To begin with, though we live in a era of peace, many academicians and common people are fond of studying history of war. On one hand, cruel details in wars exhibited by historians admonish every one of us for duplicating same mistakes and encourage people to cherish the precious time today. On the other hand, tactics and strategies made in a series of battles are successful examples and inspirations for making decisions in business world. It is said that business circles are similar to battlefields; consequently, many businessmen start to study the art of war, for its in-depth insight and potential views and understand of the situations' trends and tactics. As far as I know, some strategies and tactics once applied in war appear in teaching materials of MBA courses. They provide executives with guidance, reference and ideas for today' management.
Moreover, although the archaeologists' interest in finding human's civilization of art seems to be irrelevant to our daily lives, we can notice a lot of ancient elements around us, which are discovered by archaeologists. Today, many clothing designers prefer to use ancient patterns, which appear on the historical remains, frescos, and antiques, to decorate their products. The application of such patterns is generalized as a concept of "restore ancient ways", which is quite popular among youngsters. Therefore, thanks to archaeology----one kind of history study, our lives have more access to diversified designs.
In some respects, the study of history provides people with material value as well, though it also seems to have little correlation with our daily lives, sometime is even based on a large investment. For studying history, people preserve a lot of old buildings such as palaces, castles and mausoleums. Despite that people no longer live in these houses, governments who in charge of these structures spend a lot of money on maintenance every year, because preservation of these buildings is necessary not only for history study but also for attracting a lot of visitors. Palace of Versailles, Neuschwanstein Castle, Taj Mahal, all these are some of the most attractive destinations for tourists. Thus, local people in these travel resorts make profits from preservation of the old buildings which is originally maintained for history study.
To sum up, since everything more or less has relationship with others, directly or indirectly, as I presented above, the study of history eventually do have value for people no matter if it is relevant to our daily life. All we have to concern is how to apply the discoveries of history study into use in our daily life. |
