ISSUE 208: The way people look, dress, and act reveals their attitude and interests. You can tell much about a society’s idea and values by observing the appearance and behavior of its people.

The statement claims that the appearance and behavior of people would reveal the society’s idea and values. In my opinion, in most cases it is truly that the way people look, dress and act provide enough information about their attitude and values. However, under some circumstance relative with the religious and endemic factors, we could not glean more information about the idea and values merely on the basis of their appearance and routine behaviors.

Firstly turning to the way people act, the habits and lifestyle of the people in the society certainly tell much about the idea and values they conceives, because every action is executed under the mind of person who act. For example, it is said that “Sex and the City” is a realistic portrayal of the sexual behavior and lifestyles of many urban Americans. Set in New York City, the show focuses on four women, involving socially-relevant issues such as love affairs, safe sex, multiple partners and specifically dealing with the roles and definitions for women in society. Their attitude to life, love and sex is clearly presented, which also are the reflection of social values and the ideology shared by the audiences.

Similarly, the appearance of how the people look and dress also can inform us of their attitude and interest. Women spend generously on the make-up in order to present their beauty to others and keep as young as possible. In addition, nowadays even men began to focus on the problems with their faces, such as getting rid of the wrinkles and not so fresh looking. Why they put so much emphasis on the look, because the look is the vivid identification of a person when the good image comes to the mind of other. Besides, they also dress properly and deliberately elegant on the expanse of money and energy to keep pace with the fashion. To answer the question of why consumers become so eager to dress with the most famous and up-dated fashion brand such as Chanel, Dolce&Gabbana, Calvin Klein, Burberry and so on, some point out that the conspicuous consumption is stimulated by competition for social status. The people who buy luxurious goods and clothes because they wanted to follow fashions set by the rich and celebrity. Moreover, it reveals the value of individualism and materialism. Just as the fashion magazine editor in the film “The devil wears Prada” is known for her demanding fashion sense.

However, under some circumstance the look and dress are not the indicators of their attitudes and ideas in the religious region. For instances, a black outer garment is worn by some Iranian women and Pakistani women in public spaces; it is one possible way in which a Muslim woman may follow the Islamic dress code.The face would be covered with a long rectangular white veil starting below the eyes. How can you know their attitudes and ideas just merely judging from the wholly same kind of dress, even without a direct eye-contact? It is quiet impossible.


To sum up, the statement mainly has merit. The appearance and behavior could tell us much about a society’s idea and values in most cases; whereas coming to some religious case, it become so miserly to inform us more.
