TOPIC: ARGUMENT169 - The following appeared in a letter from a department chairperson to the president of Pierce University.
"Some studies conducted by Bronston College, which is also located in a small town, reveal that both male and female professors are happier living in small towns when their spouses are also employed in the same geographic area. Therefore, in the interest of attracting the most gifted teachers and researchers to our faculty and improving the morale of our entire staff, we at Pierce University should offer employment to the spouse of each new faculty member we hire. Although we cannot expect all offers to be accepted or to be viewed as an ideal job offer, the money invested in this effort will clearly be well spent because, if their spouses have a chance of employment, new professors will be more likely to accept our offers."

In this letter, the department chairperson suggests that Pierce University should provide employment to the spouse of each new faculty member in order to attract the most gifted teachers and researchers and improve the morale of the entire staff. To support this recommendation, the chairperson cites the result of some studies conducted by Bronston College that the professors are happier living in small towns if their spouses are also employed in the same geographic area. This letter contains several logical flaws, which render it unconvincing.(首段值得学习 in this letter,很切题)A threshold problem with the letter involves that there may be lots of differences between the two small towns so that people may not be attitude to live in the town in which Pierce University is located. Perhaps the most time during a year at Pierce University is very cold, so people may prefer living in nearby cities where the heating equipments are much better. Or perhaps although Bronston College is located in a small town, it is not far away from a big city and people could easily drive to the city, but living at Bronston College does not have such convenience. Without the details of the studies conducted by Bronston College and enough surveys at Pierce University, the chairperson cannot persuade me that people would be also happier living at Pierce University if their spouses have chances of employment.Even assuming that the chances of employment for the spouses will actually attract teachers and researchers to join Pierce University, only offering jobs for the new faculty member's spouses may make the professors who have already worked in Pierce University fell unfair. Maybe certain spouses of the old professors have not find proper jobs, and they would also like the university provide some chances of employment. If the old faculties could not earn the same policies as the new ones, they may feel unhappy and lose their morale in the following works. In brief, only placing emphasize on the new professors and ignore the old ones may fail to improve the morale of the entire staff. Finally, even if the chairperson can substantiate all of the foregoing assumptions, his assertion that spending money on this effort will be worthwhile is still unwarranted. In my observation, there are many important factors to attract the gifted teachers and researchers, such as the amount of payment, the research condition, and so on. Pierce University might gain better effort in the interest of hiring teachers and improving the morale of all the faculties, if they spend money on increasing the payment of the staff or improving the research condition rather than offering jobs for the new faculty's family members. Therefore, spending money on providing employment to the spouses may cost too much and not be the best choice. All in all, the chairperson's conclusion is unconvincing as it stands. To strengthen it the chairperson should provide more information about the studies conducted by Pierce College or make certain surveys at Pierce University to reveal that people will be happier living there if their spouses have chances of employment in the same town. The final decision should also consider the feeling of the staff who has worked at Pierce College and other possible ways that may be more effective to attract the most gifted teachers and researchers.
这篇ag写的很好 采取逐渐退让式 有效的进行了反驳 我觉得我唯一可以提的意见就是要是篇限时之作就更好了 多多加油 我也会好好努力 |
