TOPIC: ISSUE151 - "High-speed electronic communications media, such as electronic mail and television, tend to prevent meaningful and thoughtful communication."
WORDS: 516 TIME: 00:45:00 DATE: 2008-7-31 16:21:16
Is high-speed electronic communications media preventing us from meaningful and thoughtful communication? The speaker asserts so. I agree with the author insofar as television has a bad impact on our effective communication with others. However, computer based communication, in contrast, has actually facilitate our meaningful and thoughtful communication.
As a mature way of mass media, television has become a combination of information and entertainment. Admittedly, people can get useful information from the television news and related programs. Also, television entertainment programs, such as talk shows, soap operas, provide a favorable way of having fun and getting a view of social life at the same time. However, such information is also available in written materials newspapers, novels and so forth. Besides, these traditional reading materials leave people with more self controlled time for thinking, discussion and reflection, instead of pushing them program after program without time for meaningful and thoughtful thinking as well as communication-as the television does.
Despite the merits of the speaker's claim in the area of television, it is fallacious in computer based communication-whether it is chatting system, e-mail or web sites. Consider the electronic technology based chatting and mail systems. These systems provide an possibility of two-way communication, which is obviously more effective than the coercive one-way methods in sparkling interests and creative ideas. Moreover, as this electronic technology grows popular over time, communicating with distant friends and even strangers becomes possible and convenient. This kind of unprecedented communication earns a lot of trust and populous among more and more people. On one hand, with a distant person, people tend to feel safe when telling the innermost feelings or even secrets in life. Such free express can be a great help in self-retrospection and self-awareness. On the other hand, a distant chatting brings unfamiliar and exciting information about an unknown area vividly, which not only fulfills the curiosity of human but also broaden meaningful eyesight.
Next consider the web sites. Just as chatting and e-mail systems, web sites are becoming more and more systematic and international. With its progress in technology and information sphere, the web system brings a comprehensive combination of knowledge, entertainment and even applicable use in ecommerce, distant education and so forth. Such progress indeed helps a lot in the process of internationalization and modernization which makes an global sight of the whole world possible. Not only does the web system contain a large amount of latest and useful information, but also, people can freely choose what and when to absorb the knowledge. For instance, a busy official may not be able to watch a scientific television program on live. In traditional days, the leisure hours may pass in gossip chatting with neighbors, yet with the web system, the scientific program is available at any time including the leisure hours, thus useless chatting may be replaced with meaningful and thoughtful scientific knowledge.
To sum up, the speaker's claim that high-speed electronic communications media tend to impede our meaningful and thoughtful communication has some merits in the television area. Yet it amounts to a misunderstanding when it comes to computer based communication. |
