TOPIC: ARGUMENT7 - The following appeared in a letter to the editor of the Clearview newspaper.
"In the next mayoral election, residents of Clearview should vote for Ann Green, who is a member of the Good Earth Coalition, rather than for Frank Braun, a member of the Clearview town council, because the current members are not protecting our environment. For example, during the past year the number of factories in Clearview has doubled, air pollution levels have increased, and the local hospital has treated 25 percent more patients with respiratory illnesses. If we elect Ann Green, the environmental problems in Clearview will certainly be solved."

The author demonstrates that residents of Clearview should vote for Ann Green, rather than for Frank Braun, and if they elect Ann Green, the environmental problems in Cliarview will certainly be solved. To support his recommendation, he cites several reasons :(1)during the past year the number of factoties in Clearview haa doubled (2)air pollution levels have increased(3)the local hospital has treated 25 percent more patients with respiratory illnesses. However,I find this argument suffers from several logic flaws.
To begin with, during the past year the number of factoties in Clearview has doubled, but this does not necessarily indicate that the current members are not protecting their environment. It is entirely possible that these factories is environmentally-friendly,and they will bring a lot of profits to this country. Moreover, air pollution levels have increased may not be the conclusion of environment damage.Mabe the polluriion comes from other places which is nearby. In addition ,even the local hospital has treated 25 percent more patients with respiratory illnesses, this may not be the case.commen sense tells us that maybe the people there get older.Without ruling out these possibilities ,the author can not persuade me that residents of Clearview should vote for Ann Green, rather than for Frank Braun, and if they elect Ann Green, the environmental problems in Cliarview will certainly be solved.
Even the current members are not protecting their environment,it can not indicate if they elect Ann Green, the environmental problems in Cliarview will certainly be solved.Because there is no direct evdence to illustrate this recommendation. It is possible that Ann Green is not better than Frank Braun.
To sum up,this argument seems unpersuasive as it stands. To bolster it ,the author should exhibit proof to show that the current members are not protecting their environment. In addition, the author should provide direct evidence that residents of Clearview should vote for Ann Green, rather than for Frank Braun, and if they elect Ann Green, the environmental problems in Cliarview will certainly be solved. |
