TOPIC: ARGUMENT238 - The following appeared in a memorandum from the president of Mira Vista College to the college's board of trustees.

"At nearby Green Mountain College, which has more business courses and more job counselors than does Mira Vista College, 90 percent of last year's graduating seniors had job offers from prospective employers. But at Mira Vista College last year, only 70 percent of the seniors who informed the placement office that they would be seeking employment had found full-time jobs within three months after graduation, and only half of these graduates were employed in their major field of study. To help Mira Vista's graduates find employment, we must offer more courses in business and computer technology and hire additional job counselors to help students with their resumés and interviewing skills."

In this memorandum, the president of Mira Vista College attempts to conclude that they must offer more courses in business and computer technology as well as hire additional job counselors to improve students’ resumes and interviewing skills. To justify the claim, the president reasons that at nearby Green Mountain College, which has more business courses and more job counselors, 90 percent of last year's graduating seniors had job offers from prospective employers. As it stands, the argument is well-presented but not thoroughly well-reasoned.

To begin with, it is obvious that the president suggests more business courses and more job counselors because Green Mountain College takes such measures, whose students' employment situations were better than that in Mira Vista College last year. But the problem is that the two colleges might be not similar enough to draw the analogical deduction. The president ignores the possibility that most major fields in Mira Vista College are not fit for employment of society, while Green Mountain College has more popular subjects. Or, perhaps the qualities of students in Green Mountain College are much better than the ones in Mira Vista College that employers are more likely willing to give the former college’s students offers. Even, maybe the reputation of Green Mountain College is better than that of Mira Vista College in society. And so on. Without considering and ruling out the possible reasons, the argument cannot convince us the conclusion.

In addition, even if the president takes account of other explanations, it is hard to come to the conclusion either. The argument is unwarranted because of a hasty generalization. The employment situation last year is not representative enough. What about years before? What about years later? It is entirely possible that the employment condition in Mira Vista College is always better than that in Green Mountain College, except last year. Therefore, the conclusion is unreliable. In fact, in face of such limited evidence, we cannot draw any conclusion at all.

Last but not least, the president omits several other factors that might weaken the argument. The comparison between Green Mountain College and Mira Vista College is doubtful. The fact that 70 percent of the seniors in Mira Vista College who informed the placement office had found full-time jobs within three months after graduation as well as only half of these graduates were employed in their major field of study is too vague to be informative. We are told nothing about the similar conditions in Green Mountain College. Maybe very few students in Mira Vista College reported to the placement office that they would seek for employment. Maybe the students in Green Mountain College needed far more time to find jobs. Maybe most students in Green Mountain College were not employed in their major field. All of these should be explored in detail.

To sum up, the argument, while it seems logical at the first glance, has several flaws as mentioned above. To strengthen the argument, the president would have to make a more comprehensive comparison between the two colleges. To better evaluate the argument, we should need more information about other possible aspects.
