TOPIC: ARGUMENT65 - The following appeared in a memo from the president of a chain of cheese stores located throughout the United States.

"For many years all the stores in our chain have stocked a wide variety of both domestic and imported cheeses. Last year, however, the five best-selling cheeses at our newest store were all domestic cheddar cheeses from Wisconsin. Furthermore, a recent survey by Cheeses of the World magazine indicates an increasing preference for domestic cheeses among its subscribers. Since our company can reduce expenses by limiting inventory, the best way to improve profits in all of our stores is to discontinue stocking many of our varieties of imported cheese and concentrate primarily on domestic cheeses."


The president of the cheese chain stores assert that best way to reduce expenses and to improve profits is to suspend imported cheese and concentrated primarily on domestic cheeses in all its stores. To justify this assertion, the president also cites data relevant to cheese selling and subscriber’s survey. However, this memo suffered from several logical flows that render it is inconvincible.

To begin with, the president unfairly indicates that the five best-selling cheeses in newest store last year are enough to prove the selling situation nation wide. Perhaps various imported cheeses were popular in all other stores, and the profits they gained were domain the most proportion of total revenue last year. And perhaps the newest store were only small part of the chain stores  and its selling report is not representative of the overall selling situation. With out prove the representative of the newest store and the proportion of the revenue it dominates, no conclusion could be address base on this.

Secondly, even assume the selling report of newest store were representative of the overall selling condition of the chains, the president omitted the possibility that last year is only an exception. It is entirely possible that last year selling condition was a special condition induces by some social incites and in all previous years imported cheeses are enjoying great popular, and in following years, and in following years the populations would still be interested in imported cheeses. without eliminate this or other problems, the president could not justify his/her assertion.

Finally, the president made the assertion based on survey by World magazine is injustice. Since it is possible that World magazine is possibily a magazine subscribed by little part of populations , and the 75% of respondence are not represent the national wide population's tests. in other worlds, majority populations in United States are enjoy imported cheeses more and are likely to consume more various imported cheeses. without rolling out these possibilities, no conclusion could be made.

In conclusion, the several logical flows diminished the convincible of president’s memo. The last years selling reports in the newest stores and the survey of World magzine is not enough to support the presidents recommendation. Maybe a survey national wide by the participation in  mass population is helpful and more reliable.
