Scholars and researchers should not be concerned with whether their work makes a contribution to the larger society. It is more important that they pursue their individual interests, however unusual or idiosyncratic those interests may seem.

Is it more meaningful that scholars and researchers pursue their individual interests rather than concern with the contribution to the society? I agree with the statement for it accords with our personal opinion and what history has informed us.

To begin with, interest is the best teacher for it provide us the motivation and the energy to finish our aim. Without it we could hardly enjoy the luxurious and convenient modern life brought about by achievement in science- achievements motivated by interest. Without it we would still live in the ignorance and unwisdom world for lacking knowledge and common sense- the knowledge discovered by interest. I'm not nonsense here, for there are too many discovery and invention create by scholar and researchers beginning with interest. The best example is Albert Einstein the funder of special and general theories of relativity revolutionized modern thought on the nature of space and time. It's his interest stimulate him to form a theoretical base for the exploitation of atomic energy. In addition, Newton and Watt are all inspired by their own interested and started their survey and study. And thus, the results of their studies motivated by the interests that benefit the society and we can now live a easy life with all these high-tech and convenient equipment.  

Most of time, hardly can anyone predicts the future, so it is also impossible for an scholar or research to decide whether the researches will be of any contribution to the society or not in all situations. Even after the discoveries are appeared, whether it is beneficial or not is still a mystery for many people at that time. For example, Nicolaus Copernicus who was brave enough to pursue his own interest and finally discover the theory that the earth and other planets revolve around the sun. Disrupting the Ptolemaic system of astronomy, the unconventional theory is not admitted at that time for disturbing the order of the society. However, nowadays, the theory has become a common sense and we all admire Copernicus and this truth. So even Copernicus interest did not well accord to the world's common, it may still have the worth for insisting the interest.

However, when pursuing personal interests, scholars and researchers should also concern about the responsibility to the whole society. Living in the same world, people are all responsible to obey the regulations, moral and ethic standard. Otherwise, the world will become a mass and the study of scholars and researchers will lose the meaning. This is why a doctor should cure a patient rather than use him as a sample. This is why a scientist cannot have a further exploration on human colon as his wish. Whatever he does, a scholar or researcher should insure it is no harm for human society and observes the rule.

There is no doubt that interest is one of the biggest motivation, with it one can achieve a lot of his dreams. Meanwhile, forgetting social responsibility is not allow, for individual is own to a society, own to the world and own to the planet. Therefore, making more contributions though the motivation of our interest is the best way to sole this issue.
