TOPIC: ISSUE207 - "Rituals and ceremonies help define a culture. Without them, societies or groups of people have a diminished sense of who they are."

Would the deficiency of rituals and ceremonies in cultures diminishing people's sense of who they are in societies or groups? I agree with the speaker’s assertion since rituals and ceremonies are helpful in define a culture, and societies should concerns on their importance in sustain the definition of culture.

Rituals and ceremonies domain certain proportion of illustrate and exhibit cultures and they are effective in demonstrate the culture character. The diversified wedding rituals and ceremonies in different country is one of telling examples, In German, wedding took place in the afternoon, during which brides and relatives would break porcelains to declare the end of brides’ signal lives and to bring up happy and blessedness to the new marriage lives. Yet, in china, wedding took place in the morning, and to brake any thing during wedding are recognized as signs of misfortune; apparently, the two country’s different culture background reflect in its ceremonies and rituals.

In the other aspect, rituals and ceremonies is not the only means to define the culture, societies and groups of people could define themselves by other means of culture character. The study of unique languages of different countries, and the study of traditional literatures in compulsory educations provide opportunities for people to establish a strong sense of who they are. Moreover, the traditional social roles and regulations are helpful in define the unique culture, Chinese special administrative region HongKong, whose cultures are combined westerns and Chinese traditions, also has its great specialty as her enjoys the principles of “one country, two principles” HongKong people enjoys their idiographic culture as their political definition, and the two are mutually benefit in highlight the definition respectively.

The other problem I want to address that relevant to culture definition is that with the development of contemporary internationalize communication in political and economy, the importation of various cultures and its affiliated characters including rituals and ceremonies becomes more attractive to young generations. The study of English in purpose of facilities international communications and the compliance to new geological place when large populations migration took place are also diluted culture identity global wide. To prevent future culture extinction, people should be reminding of certain culture identity including rituals and ceremonies. Otherwise, the inclination of culture diminishment in people’s mind would expanded as people do not concerns about the important part of culture definition, here is to say, rituals and ceremonies.

To sum up, rituals and ceremonies are important in culture definition; even though they are not the only means to define a culture, societies and groups who ignore them would dangerous themselves in lose the culture identity.
