In this memo, the general manager suggests that the radio station KNOW should broadcast continuous news instead of rock-and-roll music. To support his suggestion, the manager cites several examples such as the increased number of elders in the listening area, the decline in the sales of recorded music in the local music stores, and the people's interests in politics before the recent election. In my point of view, the examples provided by the manager lend little credible support to his conclusion.

To begin with, the general manager's assertion that older people prefer continuous news than rock-and-roll music is open to doubt. Maybe the elders care little about the outside news, and would like to live in peace and with happiness. As a result, lots of older people may like music, whatever the musical style is, rather than the boring continuous news. Lacking evidence that shifting the radio station's programming from rock-and-roll music to a continuous news format will be welcomed by the older people, the general manager cannot justify his conclusion.

In the second place, the local music stores' report that the sales of recorded music has decreased could not reveal that people turn to dislike the rock-and-roll music. On one hand, it is entirely possible that the decreased sales are mostly because of the other styles of music, such as classic music; while the rock-and-roll music records are still popular. On the other hand, perhaps the reason why the number of music records sold is decreased is that increasing people get used to buy the digital copies of music from the online stores, which are cheaper and more convenient than from practical stores. Under this circumstance, people are still like listening the free rock-and-roll music via the radio station. In brief, without ruling out all other possible explanations for the decline in the number of sales of recorded music, the author cannot convince us.

In addition, the result of the survey taken just before the recent elections could not show the real interests of listeners in common times. It is highly possible that people became more interested in politics is because they concerned the election, which result would significantly influence their daily lives in the future. When the election was over and people returned to their common works, they might not care much about the political news as before.

Finally, the general manager provides no explanation for the decline in the total number of local listeners, and the success of continuous news stations in neighboring cities. Without analysis of the differences between the situations of radio station KNOW and of the news stations in neighboring cities, the manager's claim that broadcasting continuous news will also be successful in local radio station is still unwarranted.

To sum up, the general manager's suggestion is unpersuasive as it stands. In order to better evaluate it, we need detailed explanations and descriptions of the mentioned examples. The manager could also provide other evidences to support his conclusion.
