agree/disagree:university students should be required to take basic science classes even they are not part of the field of the study.
The arrangement of university curriculum is always a hot topic widely discussed by people, especially the one that whether students should take basic science as compulsory subject. Some people argue for it, while others hold it unnecessary or even useless in that there are many majors which don’t require basic science at all. Personally, I believe that it is very necessary for university students to study basic science.
First of all, basic science classes can help students broaden their horizons. Through basic science study, students could acquire a large amount of knowledge which they might not have chance to learn before. For example, they could appreciate the wonders of nature under the professor’s guidance in the geology class. Also, they could have a good exploration of the mystery and power of universe in the astronomy class. With such knowledge full of variety, students can get a better understanding of the world they live in and their minds wouldn’t be limited only to certain areas any more. Therefore, basic science subjects are an essential part of university education.
Furthermore, the study of education benefits students not only in the enrichment of knowledge, but also in the development of their interest and potential. During the study beyond major, some students might find themselves interested in a field that they have never gone into before and then gradually show their potential and talent. This is probably the starting point of future success. For instance, the well-known scientist Benjamin Franklin was only a printer, when he was young. It is his interest in natural science that inspired him to read widely and then step by step became one of the most brilliant and influential scientists in human history. Interest is the best teacher. Basic science classes can exactly provide a favorable environment for students to explore their interest which would motivate them to study.
Some may argue that if students put the time spent on basic science classes to their major study, they could make much progress. That might be the truth. However, with the increasing fierce competition in modern society, a student’s excellent performance in single filed might not be a guarantee of satisfied job in the future, while well-rounded person always receives more preference from employers. From this sense, on no account should we ignore the value of basic science classes, no matter whether they are needed for some majors.
Considering all the factors above, we may safely arrive at the conclusion that basic science education is completely necessary for university students. It allows students to enrich their knowledge, explore their interest and is helpful for their personal development. Although many majors are not related to basic science, it still plays an important part in university study.
