A recent statistic report from National Business Department shows that in year 2008, the total amount of automobile in China has exceed 50 million and the growing tendency is faster and faster year after year. Sure enough, automobile manufacturers will be glad to see such a scenario, since this means a tremendous potential market. However, is it real the case? Or, will this growing pace be kept in the following 20 or more years? I don’t think so.

The first and foremost reason I am pessimistic about the prospective of automobile involves its energy sources. At present, cars are almost wholly driven by the impetus generated from the combustion of petroleum, which is however a nonrenewable and non-environmental natural resource, A scientific hypothesis says that in view of the present consuming speed, our oil will be used up within 100 years. Unless the invention and application of new energy automobile, which I am not quite sure will also be named “automobile”, can succeed, it is really difficult be sanguine about the future of those manufacturers.
Moreover, in the process of exploring fossil resources, the cost is amounting up continuously. Off-shore oil well needs more expense than an on-shore one. The deeper the well, the more money needs to be spent on cementing, coil tubing, sanding and etc. Oil companies are not donors, more often than not, they transmit those expense directly to customers, which means the petroleum price will higher up periodically. With more and more families cannot afford the extorted price, less and less automobiles will be on the purchasing lists.

Secondly, slowing down growing pace of cars, especially private cars, is now also the government concern. While driving the development of other industries and GDP and thus benefit the national finance, automobile industry also brought government dozens of troubles including air pollution, to much noise, overcrowded cities, death of traffic accidents and etc. Therefore, many governments now start figuring out new ways to lower the number of private cars, and advanced public transportation is one of the best choices. Successfully persuading 20 persons to take a bus may means the number of automobile on the road slash down from 20 to 1. Such policies will in short term spur the needs for bus or microbus, but in the long run dampen the overall automobile market.

Tomorrow is like a chocolate box, nobody knows what is next. We can never know if there will be some sensational invention born in next second brings us to a new era. But one thing is definite, automobile, while endowing us great comfort and convenience, also creating us bunches of headaches; and as long as the spirit of progressing and eager for a better life exist among human beings, a new and revolutionary creature will be invented to substitute this double edged sword. Thus it is hard to convince me that the automobile number will keep increasing year after year.
