agree or disagree :advertisements is a waste of a company's money and time because consumers have known what they want to buy(07.12.8传媒类)
Advertisement is absolutely not a waste of a company's money. On the contrary, advertising, more often than not, brings more profits to a company.
It is argued that since consumers have in their mind what they want to buy, advertisements don't influence their choices. This argument is quite questionable. People go to supermarkets or department stores searching for needed goods, but they may not be very clear what brand of goods best suit their needs. For example, my mother goes to supermarket to buy milk when we drink up milk. She is very clear that she is going to buy milk. But what kind of milk? Which brand of milk? My grandpa needs milk containing added calcium. My sister needs milk of low fat to keep slender. I want tasty milk. Only from advertisement could my mother be able to find suitable milk in a small amout of time for all of us.
Despite the fact that advertising costs companies much money, statistics show that companies that make advertisments earns more money than companies that do not. There are a couple of reasons.
First, advertisement informs people of the advantages of the goods, so that people are more likely to choose them. People choose goods according to their information. Some goods with equally good quality are probably ignored by consumers if there is no advertisement telling people of its high quality. Besides, consumer psychology also discovers that people tend to buy familiar brands. "Familiar" means that people once bought the goods and are very likely to buy it again. It also means that people often hear about the brand, thus becoming familiar with the functions and advantages of the goods. Hence, advertisements help promote goods, and the advertising company, in turn, can harvest huge profits.
Second, advertisements help build a positive image of advertising company. In addition to enlarging sales, companies can establish a good image through advertisements. For example, in advertising, Nike uses the motto "Impossible is nothing." Many younsters buy Nike shoes because the motto gives them motivation and courage. Nike company represents "never giving up, keeping going." This image is favored by younsters who want to break dogma and try everthing new. So they are easily identify themselves with the company, assuming they are of the same kind.
To sum up, advertisements help companies target the prospective consumers. They promote sales and build a healthy and positive image for companies. As a result, advertisements is a good means for companies to earn more profits.
