As we know, nowadays the ubiquitous advertisements are part of the society. However, are they really kind of wasting time and money for companies? The statement's answer is “yes” for the reason that the consumers know what they need. Personally, I disagree with the statement because consumers are not always aware of what they want to buy and the advertisements have crucial effects in some other aspects rather than introducing the products.
The main reason for my disagreement with the statement is that consumers sometimes do not know their needs. With the remarkable improvement of people's living standard, various products and services have been invented and introduced to consumers. An inevitable result is that there exist too many kinds of products and services for people to buy and people get confused about how to spend their cash. When one feels thirsty, hundreds of drinks on the shelf in the store waiting to be brought; when one gets a headache, a number of medicine are available for curing the disease; when one what to improve his oral English, plenty of classes could be put on the choosing list. Not surprisingly, it is from advertisements that people get to know the differences and details of the numerous services and products and eventually make their choices. Thus, it is not right to conclude that people already know what they need to buy.
Another essential reason involves the significance of advertisements. On one hand, companies could leave the consumers a deep impression through a well-designed advertisement such as Nike's famous advertisement-"just do it"- which makes people recognize their company in a simple and easy way. This is kind of selling their brand rather than their products but it would undoubtedly improve their sells in the long run. On the other hand, there are some special advertisements that concentrate on the social problems, such as Global Warming, pollution and burst of population, rather than their products. These advertisements show that the very companies are willing to take the response of these problems, this will attract people who care about such issues. In short, advertisements are of value for the company.
To sum up, I disagree with the statement that advertisements are useless. Instead, it goes without saying that advertisements help the companies as well as the consumers a lot in many aspects.
